Transmission slips in 4th gear

I have a 1991 190e 2.3 which does the same thing at times on the higway.A master Mercedes Mechanic things it is the modulator valve or the vacuum hose to it .It is necessary to drop the rear of the tranning to get access to the modulator valve. Some suggest cutting a hole in the driver floor tunnel under the carpet to access it instead.I think this is retarted .I will let you know how this works and if it remedies the issue, Cheers
