Replacing rear shocks an easy job?

Hi MB World readers....after hitting god knows how many expansion joints on the way down to Cincinatti for a warbird rides day I came to the conclusion that its time to replace the rear shocks on my 230K miles 1991 2.3e. Don't laugh too hard...they are the originals... :0

Was curious if I should let a tech replace the shocks or can they be replaced with hand tools. Figured the struts would be a tech item but thought the shocks (if the bolts are not completely frozen) might be something for me to replace....

Any thoughts, comments and steer welcome!

Rauhbatz,

Replacing the Rear Shock Absorbers on your 190E is a fairly simple job, doable with common hand tools.

You need to get the back of the car up with a jack and jack stands. Once you are under there, you will see that there is only one bolt that holds the Shock Absorber to the control arm. There other end of the Shock Absorber is in the trunk. You will have to pull back the trunk carpet to expose the top of the Shock Absorber on the wheel wells on each side of the trunk.

If you still need to buy new Shock Absorbers for your car, we have them on our site. You can get to them by clicking HERE, or by clicking on the photo of the Shock Absorber below.

If there is anything else I can help out with, please feel free to post or send a PM!

The only fuss with that job is getting the lower mounting of the shock up and out of the lower control arm. It's easily doable with hand tools, just take your time.

All done! 190 goes like a dream!

Due to business travel I had a great local car tech firm do the shock replacement...had it done while I was getting the rear muffler replaced!

190 now corner like an F1 car w Bilstein shocks....can't wait to get the struts done!

Thanks to all who offered any commentary !
