RPM counter

Its not working :-( I've an '88 190D ... is this a common thing or should I start trying to remove the guage console and get my multimeter in there?
One more question... is the fan electronically controlled ?

I am 99 per cent sure that your over voltage shelter (I don't know the English word, I just translated straight from Finnish "ylijännitesuoja") has broken down. Same happened to my 250 D and many many other diesels also.

Thanks! I checked the fusebox... 2 blown... tach and electric mirror now working again... !
