HELP: economy meter and high gas consumption

I just got this benz 190E fairly used and have done some major work on it but THEN it consumes fuel a lot and my economy guage meter needle is forever stuck at the RED colored part..
What can I do about the fuel consumption and the meter..
It a benz 190E w201,1985 model..
