190E AMG, EVO II & 2.5-16v

Hi,

Can anyone tell me the difference between the engines AMG, EVO II & 2.5-16v for the 190E model?

And also, if I were to buy performance headers for my 2.5-16v, what's a good brand?

First, AMG tuned the 2.3L, offered a "power pack" electronics package for the 2.5-16, offered the 3.2L "Baby Hammer" and did a few V-8 transplants.

The 2.5-16 lengthed the stroke of the 2.3-16 from 80.25mm to 87.25mm with the same 95.5mm bore to satisfy complaints about lack of torque. The longer stroke increased swept capacity from 2,299cc to 2,498cc and upped power to 194bhp at 6,200rpm. Surprisingly, maximum torque was a mere 2lb/ft better on paper, but in practice the torque curve was much less peaky. Also surprising was the drop in compression ratio from 10.5:1 to 9.7:1.

The EVO II 2.5-16 is a substantially different motor than the regular 2.5. The oil pump is chain driven; the block was altered accordingly. Removing four of its eight balancing counterweights lightened the crankshaft. Stronger tappets and valve springs matched the high-lift cams, which brought valve lift to 10.7mm instead of 9.5mm. The inlet and exhaust ports were carefully gas flowed and the compression ratio was restored to the 10.5:1 of the original 2.3-16. A larger throttle body was used in the fuel injection system, which remained Bosch Motronic, but with a re-programmed ECU and resulted in a healthy 235bhp at a screaming 7,200rpm with the limiter set at 7,700rpm. Torque output was up to 181lb/ft between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm and to offset the higher revving motor, the final drive was lowered yet again to 3.46.
