my190sucks

Hi,

The previous owner of my 84 190e 2.3 replaced the ignition key and tumbler to a generic one and I have lost the only key (so factory keys can't be ordered)

I know the whole ignition set has to be expensivly replaced, but is there any way to safely work around it?

My car is just about to die permenantly so nothing is out of the question.

Can I have the tumbler drilled, or rip the whole set out and install a push button start?

As of now the car is parked, but the steering lock is not engaged (I think this is good?)

Have you visited an MB service department? They may have some ideas.

i have a friend with a 190 and he can start it up with a screw driver so their probably is a way around it. good luck!
