AC/heater fan intermittent

AC/heater fan intermittent
Recently purchased a 89 190E - the fan controls started acting weird, if I press the front defrost button, a loud noise is heard under the dash, then the wholee control system shuts down - nothing works, no fan speed, no AC, etc. After a while the fan will come back on and things work again till the defrost button is pressed.
Next, the rear window defroster is non functional - the button lights but nothing defriosts - all fuses are good.
Any ideas?

Check the blower motor for binding. The fans on mine loosened up and it made alot of noise, sometimes it wouldn't work at all. The defroster could be the defroster grid in the glass. Check for breaks on the grid and th connection to the grid those silly tabs are easy to break.
