Problems with Ethanol in Gasoline
My grandson was telling me that the last time he filled the gas tank on his 190E 2.6 the gas mileage was considerably lower than usual. I have noticed that in Ontario there seems to be very few gas stations that sell ethanol free gasoline. I am wondering if the problem with the lower gas mileage might be due to the ethanol % content which in Ontario seems to be about 10%. Gasoline Regular is now more than $2.00 @ litre and Premium is about $2.30. I am more concerned about the longer term effects that his ethanol has on the fuel system on this 33 year old Mercedes. Even Premium fuel seems to conatin some ethanol in this area. I understand that Shell V Power 91 might not contain ethanol but we don't have a Shell station within an easy drive from my remote community. Are there any additives that might mitigate the negative effects of ethanol?

As I've noted to you in that other forum, I've used premium gas with ethanol in my 91 190E since it was brand new and I've never had a problem. I'm inclined to think that there are likely other culprits causing the drop in fuel mileage for your car given it's 33 years in age. Is your car exhibiting any additional symptoms other than the low gas mileage? Earlier this year, I finally had to replace all of my rubber hoses because they were 31 years and were deteriorating due to age. This might be a good place for you to start as it's possible 1 of the rubber hoses has deteriorated to the point that fuel might be beginning to leak. I would also additionally check the condition of all of the engine wiring and connections to also be sure that nothing is deteriorating or is a dirty connection that needs cleaning.

BTW, gas mileage does vary depending on the type of driving being done. Mileage will be considerably better for highway driving than mileage that's driving just around town and in stop and go traffic.
