cooling fan electric problem

Hello,
I have a 1991 190E 2.3 car. I bought it like two months ago. The car is in a good condition mechanically with only 97,000 miles. But I have had a problem with the cooling fan ever since I bought it. At first I noticed that the RPM guage, the tacometer, wasn't working and the cooling fan, the one mounted on the engine wasn't working either. And the electric fan, the auxilary fan, which I thought should only work with the AC is on as soon as the engine gets hot and it stays on even if the AC is not on. My guess was that since the cooling fan doesn't work the engine substitutes by turning on the auxilary fan so the it doesn't overheat. My mechanic told me that I have to change the fan clutch. But I noticed that one of the fuses, I think number 10, was broken and when I changed it. The tacometer and everything else started to work even the cooling fan. However that was only for 10 minutes and then the fuse blew againg. And now it blows everytime I change it. My mechanic still insists that it is the clutch. But my question is can the clutch cause this short? Because I don't want to change the clutch and then it turns out that the short is still there and there was nothing wrong with the clutch especially that it is not cheap. If anyone has information about this please let me know since I need to fix this fast because the engine is starting to overheat everytime I am driving in the city.

if your engine is overheating

if your engine is over heating then it is a very good chance that the magnetic clutch is gone and the blades are just free spinning. You can tell real quick once the engine is hot. Make sure the ignition is off and the keys in your pocket. First try spinning the rad fan when the engine is cold then try again when it is hot. That will answer any questions you have. The quick fix is to spot weld the fan blade housing to the pulley housing. You can always cut the welds away if you chose to repair the clutch - the down side is the rad fan will always be on robbing a couple horse power.
