being a mechanic myself, just wondering maybe if you could give me some advice on what to look for, other than normal leaks and such. ball joints, tie rods etc.. what wears out on these the most?

Ball Joints
I had a ball joint break on my car so I replaced both ball joints, tie rods, steering damper and the center link thingy.
To make a long story short, you can't lubricate the ball joints, but they are well sealed. Apparently, the seal was torn on the broken one and it was rusted pretty good. As for the rest of the parts that I replaced as a precautionary measure, they were in excellent shape.
As long as the boots are in good shape, you should be ok.
