180e problems

Ive had my 1991 (92 spec) 180e for a year or so now (in case you dont know the 180e is the cheap mans version of the 190e and is built on the same W201 chassis and uses the same 1.8l 4 pot engine). It was my dads old car so its in excellent condition. Theres only a fe little things i need fixed.

There was a problem with the car kicking down to first from idle, apparently it was flooding fuel or somthing. A mate who works at a dealership fixed this up for me but said the full throttle valve/relay (i forget) needs to be replaced. You can feel it sometimes, it doesnt kick down or shift properly when you really floor it Anyone have a similar issue? Costs?

The car also jerks a little when shifting from 2nd to 3rd, apparently this is common across all the Mercs of that era but its still something i need to check out.

Theres also a a litle condensation and crud behind the plastic in front of the guage cluster, it really irks me and i havent figured out how to remove it. Anyone know?

The gear shifter (auto tranny) is also a little loose, is that something i can fix myself or does the whole gearbox need to be torn apart?

cheers in advance.

The gear shifter being loose is fixed by rubber bushings available at www.bimmerzone.com . It can be done yourself with extra long needle nose plyers. You access the linkage from under the car.

Where are you located?
Here they just say 190E 1.8. It was idd the basic version of the 190 model, it replaced the 2.0 carburator with 95hp.
Isn't the '180E' the exact same car as the 190E, except for the engine and some basic options that weren't there?

greetz,

1992 180E
yea its the same as the 190e, it has the 1.8l engine and its definately not carby-fed. The manual it came with is the 190e one. As far as i know mechanically its the same with only a cut-down options list (no power windows, cruise control etc). The engine is the same as the 190e's 1.8l tho (i htink)

oh and im in Australia. Theres a few of thes 180e's around, dont seem to be many overseas.

Can't remember the exact year but we had the 190E 1.8 as well (I nearly bought one, and through research about it, I discovered this site!) till 1992 I think.

We got the stripped out 180E in order to undercut the Luxury Car Tax in place here. Sold very well, good resale (for some reason!?) but has as many toys as an empty draw.

190E retailed for about $65K
180E retailed for about $45K (when new)

try benzworld (similar forum to this, but there are more Australians there who have plenty of info about W201, esp 180E).

If your in Melbourne, PM me.

Regards

Tim
