The real 1000hp AMG...It's about TIME
So It's about time someone made a real forced induction 6.2L M156 setup, so here we go. The plan is to twin turbo the motor, and make over 1000 horsepower to the tires. At this time I bought the motor and i have taken it completely apart. The connecting rods are being made by Oliver rods. Its basicly going to be a light weight billet steel rod, and the pistons are being made by Ross pistons. I also sent out the main bolts and head bolts to ARP to make some studs to hold it down for boost. I've also been looking into a fuel system for this beast so i got a set of precision turbo 96psi injectors and I'm in the process of making a billet hat in the tank to put 3 255lph fuel pumps, and im also making some billet fuel rails. Here are some motor pics. I will post the pistons and rods in a couple weeks when i get them. Enjoy!!

Wow...those pistons look like they have seen some heat. Sounds like an awesome project and I know the trials and tribulations of shooting for 1000rwhp. If you're sticking with the auto, this would be a great accomplishment. I think a pair of twin 61 precision ball bearing turbo's would net you the power you are looking for, plus spool up relatively quick. You could always throw a small shot of gas on it to help spool.

He can even run a pair of PTE Billet Wheel 62mm as well. Sound Performance of Chicago (Well known Supra shop that does everything else) had a twin PTE 67mm on their Shop 350z, the billet 62s not only outspooled the 67mm by 500rpm but made more power. Final result was 1033rwhp at 30psi. For the OP, amazing project. The 6.2 alone is insanity, with two turbos we're taking about road domination. I wonder if anyone would come out with a production, finalized kit to turbo the 6.2 aside from the specialty tuners such as Brabus, Kleemann,etc.

Sounds like a helluva cool project, however, I looked into turbos about a year ago, I talked to some of the best people in the industry and once they got the specs on the motor they all said it would be a waste of money, they were throwing out numbers of $65-$75K to make a measly 650rwhp (at best). They all stated the block would not handle it except under very low boost. They all said I would be better off sleeving the motor and bumping up the displacment for about half the cost and nearly the same rwhp figures.

thanks for the input everyone. As far as turbos go Tial turbo is doing a mini sponsorship so we are designing a set of turbos good for about 1400bhp. They will be a little bigger thencthe billet wheel 62mm from precision. I am also getting the v-band turbine housing from Tial which will be really nice, light, and will save a ton of space.
As for making the same or close to same n/a would be extremely hard. There is no way an n/a motor that is even 400ci can make 1000whp and still be streetable. I agree that there is a lot left in this motor but not that much.
I will have flow numbers on the heads this week and I will post up some updates. Thanks guys.

Hope this project gets done - If you can figure out how to make it reliable you might be onto something for other 63 guys. My only question is what are you going to use for a transmission ?
Lastly - where'd you get the motor ? The exhaust manifold looks like it's from a CLK Black Series ?

Having been first to do on several porsche projects and many hot rod back yard monsters, I commend you efforts as there is no question that the motor has a lot left in it but 1000 hp maybe ambitious depending how long you want it to last. In these build ups horsepower isn't a problem reliability is.
Three observations, often times turbo applications will spec. stretch bolts for the heads, you indicate ARP at some boost level (I'm guessing) of around 2 bars. I know you will have head gasket issues and the thought is to increase clamping force to correct this problem. I found it was better to use the stretch bolts and loose a head gasket rather than internals.
Secondly, porsche solved the head gasket thermal problem by having the piston extend slightly into the combustion chamber; is this possible in the M156 given your going with new pistons.
Lastly, the torque from this will be over 800 ft lbs, what transmission will you be using.

Stuff the trusty MB 5-speed into it and have the tuner cap the torque at 800 foot pounds if stock or if your strengthening it then it'll take 900 pounds...rtech can and do do that. I think going for 1000bhp would be madness but 800bhp should be reliably attainable...g/luck

I am glad somebody has finally decided to tackle the project of adding forced induction to the M156 engine. And although there may be difficulties encountered along the way, I'm optimistic that a satisfactory compromise is reachable and the project completable.

I'm really not worried about the motor being reliable and handling that power. I am going to be very careful when doing it but I am not scared at all. I have built many many ford gt/shelby gt500 and even cobra motors that have made way over 1000whp and the block and heads cant even touch the M156 motor. They both have the same size head bolts and the main cap design on the M156 is far superior. Even the crank is made by the same manufacturer, and is the same exact forging, and if anyone has heard of John Mehovitz (owner of accufab throttle bodies), he makes lets just say a lot of power with the cobra crank. Enough to go 6.2x at 225+mph.
As far as transmission goes I am seriously debating on putting at manual 6 speed in it.

BTW this turbo kit is the biggest POS. I dont understand why only 3 cylinders on each bank feed the turbo, and those turbos wont support the power i want to make.

Im honestly going to say this will take 4 or 5 months to finish everything, so i dont want to get peoples hopes up. Its a big project, especially when the rods take about 6 weeks to make and the same with pistons.

If you want to make some serious power why not use the MB choice? M119 closed deck engine produced >1800HP in qualifying boost setting. Nothing touched this in the day.

Sounds great! Can't go wrong with Tial, the best wastegates and a great turbo choice. Please keep us posted!

Even with double overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, although advanced for its time and still is compared to most engines today... 1800 HP just by turning up the boots for qualifying
What I do know is that the Mercedes-Benz C11, successor the the Sauber C9, made 950.00 hp (700 kW) out of its Twin-turbocharged
