Cigarette lighter power always on?

Cigarette lighter power always on?
I plan on using the cigarette lighter/dc power. Is this always powered even when the key is off or out? Is there a way to switch it so it's always on?

Power to be always on (cig lighter)
Awhile back, there was a posting on setting up the cig lighter to be always on, as follows;
If you move the fuses for the 2 power sockets (cig lighter) on the engine compartment, you can make them key-switched or always on. I have the front one switched and the rear one on. Open the fuse block under the hood, and there will be 2 fuses for the cig lighter....I think they are 53-54, they are the only ones with 2 locations. Viewing your car from front to rear, they are located on the left hand side, 2 back from the closest part to the windshield . You take it out and place it on the right for always on or on the left for switched.

Many thanks to Konigstiger
OK, this fuse block is located under the hood, driver's side, up against the firewall. Undo the flat protective cover, and you'll see the protective cover for the fuse block. Push toward the rear - the 2 sliding locks and lift the cover off to reveal the fuses.

Excellent information! I have left my cell chargers plugged in my vehicles 24/7 for years with no ill effects. It's always irritated me that the Mercedes was switched instead of always-on (typically the only time my phone gets charged is when I leave it in my vehicle)....will certainly take care of that tonight thanks to this thread!
Thanks for the info.

E-320 Bluetec
Useful info, I always wondered why my power outlet wouldn't stay on like in my Yukon. On my '07 Bluetec, the the back fuse (I'm assuming that is the back power outlet) was already to the right, and it is not on w/o the ignition on. Swapped the front one to the right and it turned the ashtray p/o into always on. Nothing in the owners manual about that!

So, is the default setting switched for front ashtray cig lighter and always on for rear of console power outlet? It seems to me, you'd want the reverse so that if a child leaves something plugged in to the rear outlet.

So I checked this post a day or so after I originally posted.. and no repsonse... took my car to the local car stereo store in town and had them do this... charged me $100 to switch to always on... then I come back now and see all this activity on the post... oh well.. wish I wouldn't have been in such a hurry.
Although I did have them run my XM antenna and add two cig light adapters behind the ash tray.. I pulled the ash tray insert out .. drilled a small hole through and now have my XM in the ash tray.... works perfectly and best part is it's hidden.
Either way .. thanks for the info. Good to know.

Did they mount the cig light adapters to something in there or are they just loose? Also, do you know about the small rubber mat you can get for the compartment to use when you've removed the ash tray? Check the thread I started around April 2008 about that. You'll see the part no and picture.

they are loose back there.. but they are both being used.. one for my xm and the other a power adapter for my palm pre phone. Took some work getting everything tucked in here and there so the ash tray would fit back in. I did get it finally and everything seems great so far.
Not sure what your talking about as as far as the mat but I'll check the post.
THanks.

Well, it must be different on a wagon (2008) because there's no fuse box in the engine compartment at all. I checked the manual and it indicates that the fuse box is on the left end of the dash, accessible when the driver's door is open by prying a plastic panel off. I tried removing the panel, and it wouldn't budge, so I gave up rather than break it. Has anyone removed this panel on a wagon?

You're right! It was so far back, and hidden among so much black plastic that I didn't notice it the first time. I did it and it works just as you said. The front socket is now always on, and the rear is on with ignition as before. What a great mod. Thanks Konigstiger and SPNJHockey. This is the best mod I can think of that requires no tools and no expense.

If the ipod is already in the glove compartment, not bothering anyone, why would I want to put it in the center console (which is small to begin with)?

I only suggested it tongue in cheek. However, I used to have my connecting wire plugged in, with glovebox closed - and wire coming out of the side (real cheesy) extending to the center arm rest area. I did this so that I could actually use the ipod while I was driving. I routed the wire like I said in my earlier post so that my wife wouldn't be catching her foot or bag on the wire, and I would not tempt any miscreants when the car was parked somewhere.
