Low-cost interior mod
I noticed that the front console ash tray can easily be removed, leaving a good-sized storage area -- large enough for a cell phone, and then some. MB also makes a small rubber mat that fits in that space, keeping things from sliding around and rattling (part no. 211-683-00-51) for under $5. See photos. Much more useable than an ash tray (unless, of course, you smoke).

My dealer quote is $8.82.

I originally made a template and cut a piece of drawer liner. Then I noticed the rubber mat. I think the list price is $4.82 as of this week.

OK... so where tid you put the ash tray so as not to lose it? Mine has been wrapped up & put behind the net in the trunk for years. (The rubber mat came with my '04 & I kept it when I traded.)

Storage in my E is at such a "premium", that I WON'T store my ashtray in the trunk OR the door storage area. After all, that was the point of removing the ashtray in the first place. My rubber mat should be at the Dealers on Monday, and I will store my ashtray in my house where I can REMEMBER where I put it at trade-up time.

Okay, did you know there was a recess behind the rear arm rest where the owners' manual packet fits into?

No...I didn't know about that rear area. Got my rubber mat today. $5.20 with tax. Absolutely a beautiful addition. My wife wants to just put her cell phone there while using Bluetooth. But it's really a great area for anything. The lack of armrest storage is a real bummer. With my Bluetooth controller in there, there is NO room for anything. My SL500 has much more room for storage than my E-350. There's something wrong with that.
