So apparently, when changing my fog lights for my C55, its a completely different story, the assembly, etc is totally different, and the bulbs are H7! not hb4/9006!!!

Fog light fail.

 

Hi, I have a 2006 C230 sport, can I change a fog light bulb without removing the inner fender? I gather that the light can come out from the front, but does the mesh grill just pull off, or am I looking at this the wrong way. Thanks Chris

 

driver side you can go in under the fog light...theres like 2 clips that pop out and you just pull out the liner from the front bumper and you have full access to the fog light...passenger side you just turn the wheel all the way to the left and you will see a quick access panel with like one clip that pops out...and theres a big open area where the fog light is located...takes 15 minutes at most as long as you dont have a stubborn clip!

Oh and try using the search function or going back to the first page of this thread...its amazing what you can find in a thread labeled "DIY Changing Fog lamp..." by just reading some of the posts

 

Used the search function, pulled this up. Going to attempt to install HIDs in Headlights and Fogs tomorrow, pulling bottom panel off for fog on drivers and entry gate on right, will post pics when done. =]

Got em done. Using EuroEFX 6K Sets, Lifetime warranty on bulbs and ballasts.

Headlights were easy.


Removed caps and old bulbs.
Put in new HID Bulb, plugged in extension.
Heres the somewhat tricky part, taking the cap that went over the bulb and drilling a large enough hole for the plugs to go through but small enough that the grommit on the HID plug will fit(this is so no what gets in).
Mount ballasts and plug in.
Good to go.

Now for the fogs, little bit harder.
Start with the right one, real easy, turn the wheel all the wheel in either direction, which ever you feel you have more room.
Unscrew bolts from wheel well shield.
Unplug bulb, plug in new bulbs, mount ballast somewhere in area, assembly HID.

For the left, your probably going to need an extra set of hands.
Jack the car up a bit, turn the wheel to one side, easier to go in towards the car on this one.
Remove three bolts from wheel well shield and one black rivet.
Proceed to remove rivets from underneath shield, pull shield off.
Now as soon as you take this off your going to see the washer reserve, fog light is in the front of it.
Have someone pull the bumper back(or push towards front of car) so you can get your hands in there and pull bulb out. (I suggest practicing with the bulb your pulling out to learn the motion of installing the bulb so you dont ruin the HID.)
Your going to have to have someone pull the bumper while you place the new HID bulb in the hole, then work your hand in there to tighten bulb in place.
From there mount the ballast(I used the 3m stick pads that came with mine to mount on side of washer reserve =] ) and plug in. Pop the cover back on and enjoy.

I took pictures after it was done, didn't have my camera during install, just of where I put the ballasts and what I was talking about with the cap.

Hope that helps, overall it took me and my friend Matt an hour and a half to do both sets and get everything cleaned up. I also pulled the parking light out because it looked like crap with the stock one, will pick up hyper white tomorrow so the silly messages on the inside go away.

So start ing I was on my way to work this morning, turned the headlights on and my ABS light came on, almost immediately before reading your reply. Thanks lol. I pulled the ballast off and tucked it away, kinda across from where the right one is.

Glad you saw that i guess the error went away right? If so you got lucky some people have blown the module totally which can get very expensive.

 

Yeah got to work, shut of the car, moved it. Turned it back on, error was gone, checked to make sure the lights worked and we were still in business haha. Gonna be ordering my wheels and clear corner lights this weekend. Need to find hyper white parking lights now. I'm excited. Hahah

 

hey illusionx, for your foglight HID kit did you need a harness that plugged straight to the battery to get them to work? i just got my HID in and they wont turn on. Maybe i need a harness or resistor? what do you think?

 

The HID kits I purchased from Euroefx were for the bulbs specific in the car, headlight and fog light, the harness plugged into where the bulb would normally go, sent to the ballast then the new bulb.

Anyone know a decent place for me to find projector headlights for my year? Every time I search I only find 00-05, I'd rather not order off eBay if it can be avoided.

 

w203 lights are all the same for sedans. coupes use there own style but are the same though the years.

 

on the passenger side, there is a little thermostat looking thing that comes with the fog light wiring. what is that an where does it go ? it fell out

 

thats your air temperature sensor. The one that tells you your ambient air on your lcd screen. There is a little hole on your foglight mount that it just pushes into. once its in you should be able to see it from the front of your car.

edit: just noticed you have 230, not sure if its visible from the front since your grill is different but i think the mounting is the same.

 

Those of you with HID fogs, how did you get it to work?

Let me explain. The factory 9006 incandescent bulbs come down at a right angle for the connector to go in, obviously not touching the fluid reservoir/tank right behind the fog light on the driver side. But 9006 HID bulbs protrude straight out.

I took the whole front bumper off, put the HID bulbs in, and when I put the bumper back on, the back of the HID bulb on the driver side where the 2 wires connect is jammed up against the fluid tank, causing the bumper to not quite go in/down far enough to where it was previously. It is not noticeable when looking at the car from a few feet away, but it was tough to get the 2 bolts to align properly when putting it back on so I knew something was up. Since this causes the driver side of the bumper to be pushed up/out, the beam from the driver side fog light is pointing slightly up into the air to where it blinds everyone, even though I have it aimed as low as it will go.

I have tried multiple 9006 HID bulbs from multiple manufacturers and they are all about the same length and all touch the fluid tank, so the only solution I can think of is to go back to the factory incandescent bulbs, which I really don't want to do, or to somehow make more room directly behind the bulb.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't either, though I don't see how it's not happening to everyone if all our cars are designed the same way.

 

I have a cracked fog light lens so while I am replacing that lens, I am going to upgrade all my headlight, fog and parking bulbs. I have halogens in all and don't want to do a HID upgrade (my headlights and fogs are the frosted type anyway).

I am looking for the whitest halogen light possible (for aesthetics) while keeping the lights legal (DOT or Euro [E-code] approved). I will likely get all the same brand for fog, headlights and parking light bulbs to match if possible.

Based on your experience, do you have any suggestions for bulbs?

EDIT: I have gone with Phillips DiamondVision 5000k Halogens in fogs and low beam, and then AZN Optics LED for the city lights (day time running lights). The match is pretty good.

 

As an update, I followed the instructions from the following website to change my cracked fog light lens (and bulb while I was there) - www.installuniversity.com/mb/w203/w203/fog.html.

I can't seem to find which forum member originally posted this, so I can give them credit. These instructions were PERFECT for my 03 c230k coupe and made the job VERY easy. You can't really go wrong.

Now I have a new fog light lens and all it cost me was the lens and my time (a whole lot better than hundreds of dollars from the stealership)
