hmm...good thought...also, i bought the tool for the metal core wires, hence I can use it again. Seriously, if the thickness have no effect to the efficency of the ignition then there is no reason to change to other type of wires but stick to the originals.

BTW Rockauto has the NGK for $7.53 which was a few cents more then the other place but they have the oem bosch wires hence I might do the one stop shopping....

I also did an ebay search and come up with the whole set up for $249.95 free shipping using the original Bosch FR8DPP33 and the 113 150 00 19 wires.

This might be the set up I want as the wires look exactly the same as the OEM. I'll call the dealer Monday and get the part number.

I did a lot of research before I bought my setup and this is the correct OEM setup to run on these cars.
After much going back and forth with the type of wires and spark plugs...I have finally settle with your set up and just order both the Bosch wires and plugs from Rockauto. They are still the best price for Bosch combination even with shipping. Well, that settles my agonizing choices of name brands. The web has really make buying more difficult then it used to, due to all the choices out there. Well, I am shooting for the long weekend coming up for my installation.

Hey desired_speeds,

You are spot on about the Bosch wires and plugs. You really dont need to measure the wires if you are using oem wires. These are the same wires that were on my car. The part number for the Bosch wires I bought is 0 356 912 950 which is the same part number on the wires taken out of the car. The only difference on the original wires - is a MB star and mb serial number at the bottem. It also has Bosch witten on the metal end just like the ones I bought. For all you future DIYers out there, the plug wires come with an alphabet number on the metal end which correspond to the alphabet written on the outside of each plug hole on the engine block. You can't go wrong. I had never done spark plugs in my life not less replacing 16 plugs and wires in a V8 engine!! All I have to do is match the alphabet on the plug hole opening with the correct alphabet on the wires. No rocket science here.
It took me a total of just under 2.5 hrs and with an afternoon light rain in between. The first set on the passenger side was slow but the second set on the drivers side, I jam on it in less then an hour.

I turn the engine up after that and no more shaking and vibration due to misfiring. The previous owner must never have change the wires as I can see corrossion on three of the wires and dry rot on the rubber housing. The plugs that came out of the car were not oem (no MB star on them) but were Bosch plugs.

I just save myself some serious cash and time today.....

Well, I thank you all of you who have contributed to this thread and other DIYer write up which really help me out tremendously. There is one advice I would like to say, use a non suction plug socket as it is much easier to remove when you have the new plugs screw in. The suction plug socket is great for removal of the plugs but not for installation.

Here's a picture of the new wires sticking out of the plug heads....

Although this is an older thread I will take at shot at posting to it. My 2002 E55 is coming up on it's 100K mi plug change and I would like to start ordering the parts. It appears that there has been a lot of confusion about which plug to use and I would like to hear from someone that actually replaced their own plugs what the PN was. Is it a NGK PFR5R-11? I have been considering using NGK IFR5D10 which are recommended on the official NGK website ngksparkplugs.com. I would like to hear from anyone that has used these iridium plugs in our model E55.
I am also seeking the PN and source of the 17mm tool used to remove the plug wires.

The NGK plugs use in these cars are NGK PFR 5R-11

Go to Rockauto.com and get the OEM Bosch wire set for these cars and if you want to go with NGK, they have them too so one stop shop. Get the 17mm plug tool thru eBay.

After going thru all the agony in looking for the correct plugs and wires, I don't want to see another fellow member go thru that again.

Rockauto.com has the best price for the oem wires and plugs combine even with shipping. Also, dont forget the 5% discount which you can google and get.
