A45s Front Rotors minimum thickness - 34mm or 35mm?
Does anyone know if the original rotors that come out of the factory have a minimum thickness of 35mm and hence my service center is correct in saying they need swapping out? I can't find any spec data on the internet and I figure there must be quite a few A45s owners coming up to similar mileage (kilometerage? lol) to mine who may have a similar story?
Back story:
Car is coming up to 2 years and 44,000 km but I do a lot of country km's.
Yes, I occasionally drive it hard from time to time and have had just the one track day at Phillip Island but was a bit surprised they needed replacing already.
I could not find aftermarket front rotors despite contacting a number of brake specialists (but rears are available!!) so I contacted a nearby Merc dealership for a price and they quoted $785 for a pair, so I bought them. Aftermarket performance pads off DBA (Disc Brakes Australia) were $150 so I bought them. Save myself $465 for an hour's work? A bargain I thought!
I picked up the new rotors and they clearly had stamped on them 34mm minimum thickness. Out of curiosity I checked the thickness with good quality digital vernier and they were 36.00mm.
I pulled off the wheels from my car and measured both the worn rotors. The unworn outer lip measured 36.00mm on both - same as new ones, not unexpected - but then the worn rotor measured (across 4 places) between 35.12mm and 35.24mm on both - unexpected.
I couldn't find anywhere where the min thickness was stamped on the originals despite giving them a clean in the obvious places where it should be stamped.
Going by the specs on my new ones, my old ones are not even half way worn through and hence I should get another 2 years and 40,000km based on current driving habits.
Hence my original question, does anyone know if the original rotors that come on the cars out of the factory have a minimum thickness of 35mm but maybe new replacement OEM ones are different alloy and hence can tolerate being worn down to 34mm?
