GT/C192/R192: My New 2025 GT 55 in Selenite Grey Metallic - Review and Comparison Thread
I had test driven both a GT 55 and GT 63 about a month ago, and liked them a lot. You could definitely feel the difference in HP and Torque between the two, but I couldn't cost justify in my head the price delta for the GT 63, at over $200K for the 63 I started to get to consider many other alternatives, for instance a GT4 RS or Spyder RS. Those are very different cars, but still... My GT 55 was $160K, and at that price I think it is a solid value proposition. Certainly relative to any new 911, a Base Carerra or Carrera T new is that much these days (once you starting ticking some option boxes), and this is IMO "more car" for that money. And the S, GTS, GT3 and Turbo are significantly more money. Again, not an apples to apples comparison, but I think many of us would cross shop between the two model lines. I am actually more of a 718 Cayman/Boxster guy than a 911 guy, the 718 4.0's have been my thing. I have owned 5 of them since 2021 (long story as to why, it has to do with going from street-focused to track-focused and then back to street-focused once I started to buy dedicated track cars - I am a member at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL).
I did also consider the older generation AMG GT. I drove a low-miles 2018 GT-R, and I loved it! But I didn't care for the dated tech on the UI and the lack of a Heated Steering Wheel (which were two of my primary issues with the C63S). So as much as I loved the GT-R, the GT 55 ended up being the one that checked all of the boxes best for me, of all of the used or new AMG options available..
I was (and am) concerned about the depreciation these cars experience, relative to the Porsche 718's and 911's. I generally do not keep my cars more than and year or two, and I know I will take a big hit on this car relative to the purchase price new, when I go to sell it or trade it in. I did look at Used ones (both GT 55's and GT 63's), but there wasn't much out there with the Options I wanted, and I am really picky on the Options. Buying a new or used 911 likely would have been a lower TCO at the end of the day, a more expensive car with less depreciation, but I liked the notion of this car more than a 911, short of a GT3 Touring or Turbo S, which is WAY more money, new or used. So I decided to get an AMG GT and picked this one. I will try to keep it longer than I have kept previous cars, we shall see.
The big draw for me for the AMG GT was the engine and exhaust noise, there is a real "sense of occasion" with this car, especially when driving in a more spirited fashion with Manual Shifting. And also you can flip it in Comfort Mode and it chills out and is more of a luxury GT car. Pretty versatile! That formula was compelling enough for me to break my cycle of Porsches and BMWs and jump in here with the GT 55. After 4 years of adoration of the Flat 6's in my 718 4.0's (and heavy mods to the exhausts to make them sound great), this terrific 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 will be a fun thing to experience. Also I like that these cars are much more rare than the Porsches out there, it feels like I have something a little more special and unique.
I will detail here in this thread my thoughts on the GT 55 and compare to my other cars that I have owned, and also cars that I have considered and driven. I will go through the options and discuss why I picked this one and what I would have ordered if I would have custom ordered. Also I will chronicle the experience of getting to know it, and I will likely do a few minor mods along the way.
I put about 150 Miles on the car the first day I received it, and then I dropped it off to the PPF shop for a Full Body PPF, Ceramic Coating and Tint. I should have it back by the end of next week.
A few pics to kick this off:
In the Garage, I stack my two cars in the same bay with a 4 Post Lift, currently the other car is the Modded 2024 Golf R mentioned above, but that may change later this year...
Speaking of driving the GT 55 in the Winter, I did order the Michelin Pilot Alpin Winter Tires for it, they came a few days ago. Just under $3K, yikes! That is a lot for Winter Tires. It's a bummer they don't have All Seasons in these sizes, I would have preferred to do those versus Winter Tires...
I completely agree about the driving experience with that engine/exhaust! Such a unique experience....and those cracks and pops! I'm so glad AMG engineers retain their sense of fun....which is a good word I use to describe my 55....always puts a smile on my face.
Congrats again and enjoy your car!

The visibility seems quite good with the rear spoiler. I was pleasantly surprised in that regard. Way better than my 718 GT4.
I do like the look of the Wing on the GT 55. I did seek that out as a preferred option when I was searching all the cars across the country. It's kind of funny, before I decided to get a 2025 GT 55, I drove an AMG GT-R. I was pretty close to buying it, I liked it a lot.
After having THAT wing as a reference point of an AMG GT Wing, every time I look at this one on the GT 55, I think it is tiny, LOL!
I am glad that I have the newer generation, though. I love the interior, all the features (a heated steering wheel is a must-have for me, as I mentioned), and the big screens and the UI.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Nice on the E46 M3! I had one brand new back on 2001, and M3 Manual Convertible in Red with the Black and Red interior. Who knew that we would look back at those 20+ years later as one of the best BMW M3's ever, right?
I have owned two G80 M3's and a G87 M2, and I just can't do any BMW's anymore, they have no feel in the steering wheel, for my tastes anyway. No disrespect meant to anyone who owns one and likes it. Incredible power and amazing interiors, but the driving feel is not for me. I have wanted to love the modern BMW's, but I just can't. Giving up on BMW is what lead me to the MB AMG's - so I won't complain!
You say money is no object, but I will comment on that anyway. From a TCO perspective, without question buying a used 992.1 GTS will be a lower TCO over time, while more expensive up front than a used or new GT 55 or a used GT 63. The 911 GTS always is one of the strongest 911's regarding holding value, short of the GT3 or Turbo/Turbo S.
Money aside, it really comes down to what you what. I haven't driven the 992.1 GTS, but I have driven a 991.2. I have driven many other 992.1's, including the Carrera S Manual and the GT3 PDK at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. I also Turo'ed a Base 992.1 PDK for a weekend and drive it pretty hard on Country Roads. I have found the 992 Carreras to be great cars, quite competent, especially at the limits. But for driving on the street, I find them to be a bit boring, I have felt you have to really push them to get into a place where it is very engaging. For instance the Carrera S Manual was a serious weapon on the track, but I have liked the 718 4.0's (Boxster GTS 4.0, Cayman GTS 4.0, GT4 and Spyder, have owned them all and modded them heavily) more engaging on the street at license-keeping speeds.
I would imagine that the GTS is the most engaging variant of the 911 (short of the GT3 and Turbo), given the decreased sound deadening.
I think the 992.1 3.0L Flat 6's sound good, but not amazing, with the stock Sport Exhaust. I haven't experienced one modified, that I can remember. The 718 4.0's also sound pretty mediocre stock, but can sound absolutely glorious modified, that is what I spent the last 4 years with.
The GT 55 and 63 blew me away with how great the 4.0L V8 Engine and Exhaust sounds stock. In my couple of test drives and my 150 miles on the first day, I am really happy with that relative to the Porsche options. (My GT 55 is at the PPF Shop now, the wait is killing me. I should have it back by the end of next week.)
Also as discussed, the GT's are much more rare and unique, 911's seem to be everywhere these days. I really like that about this car as well.
I don't think you could go wrong either way, the 992.1 GTS is probably the best 992.1 variant (for my tastes anyway), short of the GT3 or Turbo. I actually had one on order (in a Manual) when they first came out, but then I joined Autobahn Country Club in 2022 and started focusing on which car I would run at the track, and cancelled that order and ordered a GT4 with the PDK for the Track. That ended up being pretty short-lived, as I tracked that for a while, I decided to get a dedicated built track car (2012 Cayman R with the 3.8L 911 X.51 Powerkit Engine, at that time) and just use my Street Cars on the Street.
This car is more of a German Muscle Car with the V8, which I love. It is bigger and heavier, but seems to hide the weight well with the RWS and the trick dual valve suspension. The 911 will be smaller and lighter, and more precise, but not quite as rowdy at lower speeds.
Good luck with your decision!
You can definitely feel the extra power in the 63. But I felt the 55 was enough for me, and I went for the choice of finding a new 55 that checked almost all of my boxes for the Options and Paint Color.

And yes - very difficult to find 55's and 63's both used and new with this option. That knocks more than 50% of them out if that is a must-have for anyone.
Here is what I was half-way done typing up when I saw your reply:
Okay, so here are the Options on my car:
Options:
* Drivers Assistance Package ($1,950)
* Night Package ($750)
* AMG Aerodynamics Package ($2,850)
* AMG Night Package Plus ($550)
* Dashcam ($200)
* Multicontour Front Seats with Massage Function ($1,100)
* Heated & Ventilated Front Seats ($450)
* Fixed Panorama Roof ($2,100)
* Rear Seats with Folding Backrests ($0)
* MANUFACTUR Black DINAMICA Headliner ($1,600)
* AMG Fuel Cap ($110)
* AMG Interior Carbon Fiber Trim ($2,850)
* AMG Performance Steering Wheel in DINAMICA/Carbon Fiber ($900)
* GUARD 360 Vehicle Protection Plus ($50)
* Energizing Comfort Package Plus ($200)
* 21” AMG Forged Split Spoke Wheels in Black ($3,300)
* Augmented Video for Navigation ($350)
* Cargo Organizer System ($300)
Night Package and Night Package Plus were must-haves for me. A lot of the used ones out there didn't even have the basic Night Package, that was a show-stopper for me.
The rear seats were a must-have for me. My 3 kids are all grown up, I don't need them for rear seats, but if you want that extra length in the rear hatch, you need those. If you Golf, you absolutely need those. I don't Golf, but I do play Electric Guitar, and I am constantly taking Guitars to my Tech to swap strings, change tunings and do setups. I need that extra length for transporting guitars. The fantastic room in the rear hatch is a criteria to consider when comparing this car to any 911.
There is an idiosyncrasy I discovered. I thought I would leave the rear seat down on the time. You get a cleaner rear view with the seat bench down. With the seat bench up, you can see the two humps for the built-in headrest sort of things. But with the seat down, the front seats are aware of the bench being down, and your ability to move the front seats back and also the level of recline is restricted. I am 5'9", so my driving position is not affected, but for taller drivers it might be. Where I noticed it was in getting the Passenger Seat to a comfortable position. My 21 year old son likes his seat back and also his seat reclined a decent amount. He wouldn't be able to put the seat where he wants it with the rear bench down. This is important to me, as we go to the track together 1-2 times per weekend 7 months per year, and this would probably be the main car for driving back and forth to the track. Not a big deal, though, I would just leave the seat up when not needing the extra length, and still the hatch area with the seat is plenty of room for all the track gear, helmets, track suits, gloves, boots, laptop bags (we both bring our Laptops each day to analyze the track data).
I really wanted the Panorama Roof, both for the exterior look of that, and the option to let more light in if I wanted to.
I wanted the Aero Package if possible. I think it looks great without it, but for my tastes, I prefer it. This eliminated almost all of the used ones, and most of the new ones!
For colors I really just wanted to consider Selenite Grey or Cirrus Silver. I love all the great colors available in this car, I also like the Patagonia Red, and the Metallic Blue, but I know myself well enough to know that longer term I would be most happy with Selenite Grey or Cirrus Sliver. I usually go GT Silver in Porsches, which is a Silver that has like no Blue whatsoever in it, it has a little Gold/Brown in it. The Cirrus Silver has a little Blue in it, which is more noticeable in certain lighting. And I wasn't able to see a Cirrus Silver GT 55 or 63 in person. I might have been more happy with Cirrus Silver with the Selenite Grey, I just couldn't be sure, and I knew I liked the Selenite Grey, so I didn't want to take the risk. The previous Gen GT-R above I drove was Selenite, as was one of the GT 55's, and so was the C63S I owned briefly, and I liked the Selenite on all three of those cars. It is very understated and stealthy, which I like. I know when I see a Cirrus Silver one in person, I will have Silver envy!

I wanted the Split Spoke Wheels as well, I love those.
I wanted the Carbon Fiber Interior Package, but most of them out there were optioned with that, especially the new 2025's.
I was torn on the Seats - the standard Sport Seat versus the Performance Seats. I had driven cars with both recently. I was concerned I would regret not holding out for one with the Performance Seats (or custom ordering one with those), that was actually my biggest concern about buying this one remotely without checking it out in person. But now that I have it and have driven it, I am very happy with the Sport Seats, more on that later.
So with all of that criteria, I had found this car in a GT 55, and also there were a couple of GT 63's like this in Selenite Grey. This was $160K, and the 63's were like $205K or $213K or something like that (the more expensive one had Ceramics). Given the price delta, I went for this one. (I couldn't find any used ones in either the 55 or 63 that were even close.)

The 55 is still very quick, and probably good enough for me, I think. You can always easily tune the 55 to be as fast as the 63, but then you put yourself at risk re the factory warranty if you do so. I probably won't. (Famous last words...)
There is a configuration idiosyncrasy I discovered between the 55 and 63. The "Multicontour Front Seats with Massage Function" is Optional for the 55, and Standard on the 63.
See here:
This option is IMO a must-have!! I think many dealers miss that difference and don't spec the feature on their orders, there are a LOT of 55's out there in dealer inventories without that feature.
It is a must-have for both the Lumbar and for the lateral support. The lateral support is incredibly configurable! I am pretty thin, a 30 inch waist but with fairly broad Lats and Shoulders, so I usually go for the highly bolstered seats in any Sporty Car. But with this option with the Standard Sport Seats I can crank the Bolsters in to the tightest setting (10) and also do the Lumbar. When I do that, these seats are extremely supportive for spirited driving, and VERY comfortable. Like the best combination of all the attributes of seats I have ever experienced. (My salesperson at the dealer I worked with said this to me, but I was highly skeptical. But he was spot on!)
Without the ability to do this regarding the lateral support on the thigh and lateral bolsters, I think I would absolutely hate these Sport Seats.
Also, my wife hasn't driven in this car yet, but I am sure she will appreciate the configurability of the passenger seat in that same regard, she will dial it in to her liking and set a memory setting for it. She hasn't generally loved the highly bolstered 18 Way Sport Seats in my many 718's.

Now that I understand all of this, I am glad that I got these seats with this option, versus the Performance Seats.
So I highly recommend to anyone getting a 55 - make sure it has this option!
BTW, also if you do get the Performance Seats, you should probably also make sure that you get this option:
If Performance Seats are selected, this is an Option for both the 55 and 63. Like the above option for the Sport Seats, many dealers miss spec'ing this when selecting Performance Seats.
The GT 55 I test drove had that issue, it had the Performance Seats without this Option. I found them to be quite comfortable and supportive, perhaps a bit on the firm side, but I was annoyed to learn that it didn't have adjustable Lumbar support.

A couple of other follow up modifications from the PPF guys - I had them Black out the Chrome on the upper part of the Door Handle. It looks much better, IMO!
Also, I had them replace the Black Chrome Badges with Gloss Black Badges, also much better. When they put the "V8 BITURBO" badge on the sides, I had them leave the 4Motion+ Badges below that off, I felt it looked a little cleaner.
When I bought the car, I was pretty sure I would like it, from test driving a new 2025 GT 55 and a 2025 GT 63, and comparing to a 2018 GT-R with low miles. And I do like it, a lot!
What I wasn't sure of was where it would fit for me, whether it was going to be a very nice Daily Driver in a GT car sort of way, or more of a Sportscar. I have had the 2024 Golf R (modded to ~400 HP) since the fall of 2023 as the Daily Driver and Winter Beater, and I have enjoyed that. I had a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Manual as my last of many 718 4.0's, but I sold that last spring, and have only had the Golf R for the past year. (Don't feel too bad for me - remember that I am a member of Autobahn Country Club and get out on the track just about every weekend for 7 months a year!
)I had ordered a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 Manual, since those are going away forever very soon. But if this GT 55 checked the Sportscar box for me, I was considering keeping the Golf R for the Daily, and having this be the special Sportscar. Or, if this would be more of a sporty Daily Driver for me, then maybe I would sell the Golf R and still get the Boxster GTS 4.0.
After several drives, including some very spirited drives on country roads, I am determining that this is more of a sporty Daily Driver for me (but the best Daily Driver ever!), more so than the special Sportscar for me. Don't get me wrong, this car is very special and very sporty, but in a 8-tenths to 10-tenths scenario, I find the 718s more engaging. Sort of in the same way I find the 718 4.0 more engaging than any 911 Carerra. (When I say 911 Carrera - I mean excluding the GT3 or the Turbo S.) But that is an interesting comparison as well, because if I compare the GT or 63 to a Carerra, these AMG GT's come out on top for me over a 911 Carrera for the Daily Driver scenario.
This car is amazing for the Daily Driving, because of the Engine feel and sound, and the Exhaust sound. Also for the looks, and the comfort of it. (More on that later.)
The 718 only wins out for me when you are pushing it very hard, like for instance a 0-120 mph+ launch (only on a private airfield, of course!). Because the GT 55 is so much larger, wider, heavier, and has wider tires, etc. - there is not as much or enough of a "sense of occasion" with the GT 55 versus a 718 4.0 (the 4 non-RS versions - GTS 4.0's, Spyder, GT4). Not that there is anything wrong with that. A GT 55 or 63 (or a 911 Carrera) it is much harder to push near the limits of the car, on the street, so it doesn't feel as exhilarating when pushing it hard, as you are not getting it close to its limits. It is much easier to get to the edge of the limits in a 718 4.0, and because of that it is more exhilarating. (The GT4 RS and Spyder too, my good friend has had those and I have driven them hard.)
Given all of that, I think I will sell the Golf R (which I will miss dearly!) and take delivery of the Boxster GTS 4.0 Manual when that arrives. Especially since they are discontinuing those imminently! That would make for a little more being tied up in Street Cars than I had planned, but such is life. (I have been trying to scale back the amount of money tied up in Street Cars, to work to shift more investment into the Track Cars and related expenses.)
The transmission in this car is amazing in Race Mode with Manual Shifting. Very crisp and direct! When I go out for a spirited country road drive, I usually set it up like that, in Race Mode with the Suspension on Comfort or Sport.
The power on the GT 55 versus the 63 is quite good, especially for Daily Driving and pushing it a bit on spirited drives. But when pushing the car to its limits, I do notice the lack of power versus the 63, you can feel that the HP/Weight ratio on the GT 55 is lower than the a 718 4.0 Liter car (at least a modded one). But for Daily Driving and pushing to moderate levels on a spirited country road drive, the GT 55 power and torque feels terrific, and quite adequate.

I did end up selling the Golf R. I may regret that this winter, that was a great "winter beater".
I took delivery of the Boxster GTS 4.0, and did some modifications to it to suit my needs. I quickly came to the determination that I love the GT 55 a lot for my street car, and that I didn't "need" the Boxster. So I sold it.
My street car criteria has changed a lot over the past couple of years. I am focused mostly on a good all-around car that is sporty and unique, that is a good blend of high performance and fun, but also that makes for a good daily driver, year round if possible. My use case is really only two things. Running errands around town, and going back and forth to the Race Track. (Again, Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL - which is my home away from home.)
The GT 55 is my favorite car ever, for my needs. I love the looks of it, it is so muscular and has a very strong presence, which makes it great for the street, and great for everyone knowing my car at the track.
I like that it is so unique! 911's are a dime a dozen at the track, the Carrera's are like Camry's there, and there are a ton of GT3's, GT 3RS's and Turbos. Yet my car is pretty unique there, I think I am the only member with one. And I get complements on my car there all the time.I love the utility of the car, with the hatchback and the fold down seat. It is amazing how much room there is back there, not much less than the Golf R with theses folded down! I leave the seat folded down all the time, and during the seven months of the year for the track, I leave all of my track gear in there, two helmets (one open faced for regular closed cockpit cars, and one full face for my open cockpit car) bungeed down, my race suit, gloves, etc. Way better than a 911, and even the dual trunk of the 718.
I haven't really felt the need to do any mods yet. I would like to do something with the exhaust at some point.
I drive it mostly in Sport Plus with the Suspension in Comfort. I like the exhaust sound in Sport+, and the cracks and burbles. Also you get some nice downshift noises with burbles with deceleration, with some engine braking.
I continue to be annoyed by the wind noise from the Driver's A Pillar / Window seal area and the Brake Dust, but otherwise the car is just about perfect for my tastes these days.
I like the Aerokit a lot, I think that helps with the looks of it. I wish the Wing was a little bigger, though, like the previous generation GT-R. I love the Selenite Grey finish!!
Seems like the overall package and now uniqueness of the GT55 is really paying off compared to the 911. (Especially after the msrp announcement of the 992.2 turboS)
My hope has always been to snag a 997.1 gt3 and ride into the sunset, but maybe a GT55 could be a good pairing for my E46 M3.
