Dear Forum Members,

I just wanted to ask if the M178 engines fit universally between other models from the C190 range. I have an M178.980/M178DE40LA coming from a 2015 GTS with all of it's accessories. Will it fit in other models such as the GTR?

Any information is much appreciated. Thanks!

Regarding the complete engine assembly, including the twin turbochargers, the GT and GTS models utilize the same power unit.
The GTC and GTR, however, feature larger turbochargers along with several other detailed hardware revisions, making their assemblies incompatible with the GTS-spec M178.980 (M178DE40LA) engine configuration.

Mercedes-AMG developed several subvariants, distinguished by suffix numbers, each adapted for specific models:

M178.980 AMG GT, GT S Base and mid-level tune, standard turbos.
M178.981 AMG GT C Larger turbos, reinforced internals,
M178.982 AMG GT R / GT R Pro High-output version with larger turbochargers, upgraded cooling, titanium exhaust,
M178.983 AMG GT R Roadster Same performance tune as GT R coupe.
M178.984 AMG GT Black Series Flat-plane crankshaft, redesigned intake, larger intercoolers, 720 PS; internally coded M178 LS2

The M178DE40LAnumber is the same for all GT engine to indicate the following:

M Motor (Otto engine)
178 Engine family identifier
DE Direkteinspritzung (Direct Injection)
40 Approximate displacement in deciliters 4.0 liters (3982 cc)
LA Ladedruck, Abgasturbolader (Forced Induction – Exhaust Turbocharging)

Yes, they are the same.

From an engine standpoint, the key difference between the GTC and GTR lies in the ECU calibration, not the turbos, specifically the fuel and ignition timing maps, which allow the GTR and GTR Pro to produce higher output.
When a high-quality Stage 1 tune is applied to the GTC, it can achieve virtually identical power and torque figures to the GTR or GTR Pro.

That said, the GTR and GTR Pro feature numerous mechanical upgrades—including revised suspension geometry, active aero elements, enhanced cooling, and more track-focused damping and bushings—that collectively make them far more capable on circuit than the GTC, even if the raw engine output is matched.
