2017 GTS steering pump breaks after 6000 miles!?
I was simply driving the car..came to a stoplight...made a turn with some throttle to zip around the corner (late at night in an industrial area) and all of a sudden I completely lose the steering. It took two hands to barely turn the wheel.
Had to put the car on a flatbed next morning and get it to the dealer only to find out the steering pump broke. The dealer decided to also change the steering rack.
The car car has been at the dealer for 6 weeks now as they told me the first replacement parts that came in from Germany were broken while shipping.
This worries me as I consider the steering dying on me while driving to be a major and life threatening malfunction. Not to mention the 6 week wait.
At this point taking the car back after it was fixed leaves me with a sense of paranoia. Is this a rare but not unseen malfunction or is this totally unheard of?
keeping in mind that it is a 2017 with 6000 miles.

Are you within 12 months of purchase? If so I’d consider using the ‘Lemon law’ in your state if the car has been out of service for 6 weeks.
If not, once the repairs are done I think the car will be fine.

That is exactly my concern. Glad it failed at low speeds and late at night.

You’re talking about the power steering failing. You can still steer, it just takes more arm force. This is the way all cars were for decades. You’ll be OK!
It’s not an applicable case for the Lemon Law, LOL.

Guys- relax. This is not a “major lift threatening event”!! Steering doesn’t “fail”. There is a physical connection between the wheel in your hand and the two front wheels.

Power steering failure is what you are describing. I think what made is so much harder to turn is the wide tires of the car. Most 1980s cars had very aggressive power steering.

you’re probably right...it just felt more like the steering had almost seized to me but I don’t know much about this stuff.

My steering on my gts 2016 is locking up sometimes while driving. the car is also in the dealer and they are not able to figure out what s causing it???? I am worry about it . The first time they said it was a programing of the computer and the car was fine for a week now it is doing it again. the car is sitting there for 2 weeks now

Also the slower your are going and the sharper you have to turn will affect how hard it is to turn a car without power steering. I'm feeling old that i remember driving a car without power steering.

From another "senior" driver, at low speeds power steering especially with big wide tires is very helpful.
At highway speeds it's not doing much. the tires are rolling at such a high speed it hardly takes any effort to change their position.

My GTR seized on me today mid turn out of nowhere and I had to go straight into thankfully an oncoming lane and wave for a woman to go around me coming at me
im 285 6’3 bench 500 and I could hardly get the steering to turn two inches
it literally felt almost locked
Could’ve been catastrophic and I think I’m done with this car even though I love Mercedes and own 4 of them I e never had this happen in any of my cars, race cars, track cars, sports or street
i do road trips often and drive in canyons, mountains, tail of dragon etc I would’ve have been off the road , off a cliff if this happened on stunt road in Cali
ive had 4 battery lights pop on since buying the car and now this
ill report back with diagnosis so maybe you guys can all have yours checked if there’s any preventative measure to take

Totally bizarre as it's a hydraulic rack - nothing exotic or fancy. Let us know what the findings are.

Sorry to hear about your experience and glad to hear you ended up ok. It is difficult to steer with no power steering, especially if you are applying the brakes at the same time. I lost my power steering during a track day. It was replaced under warranty. The hose fitting leading into the pump separated, spilling fluid on my driver side brake rotor creating a cloud of smoke.
Multiple track days and 2k miles later, no issues. I run the car hard so I am confident its been resolved.
Would like to hear about your outcome.

It's becoming more evident but they are trying to hide it big time. Car companies are using cheaper ad cheaper parts and thus also trying to make cars lighter to get better emissions and better gas mileage and by reducing the wieght on parts (thus making parts like crap) and all these cars do is fail like dominos...one part at a time.

I remember one car having an issue with the P/S pump when I was there, yes they are very hard to turn without assistance. It has something to do with the funky drive system it uses, there is a coupler between the pullies of the a/c and P/S pump and it is direct drive between them. We had a similar issue where the new pump failed almost immediately. I have a feeling it's an issue with the actual assembly/alignment of the pump and accessory drive but I haven't heard much about it.
