M156 older versus newer

Pleasy anybody knows what for is the different part highlighted on following pictures between pre 2008 and post 2008 m156 engines ?

2008 E63

My intake tube clip broke last time it was removed. When it was replaced the new one came with the different intake tube that had that piece attached. I sawed it off because it has nothing to do with the intake tube and only had one air line going into it. I’m assuming it’s just a condensation collector for something that the early M156s had.

Anybody can say for sure if this newer breather hose model can be put in 2007 model without any damage / problems ? My MB service told me for this car's VIN they are given older breather hose model from parts catalog.
