Backup 05 Comand CD

Yes, it's the same old topic again...

Well, I've done a search and tried various ways suggested by forum members and NONE of it worked!!
Using Alcohol 120, I copy the image onto my hardisk setting the cd-rom reading speed at 1X, burn the image onto cd-r (tried both 74min and 80min discs) at 4x speed in "safe disc" "safe disc 2/3" "securom" and "securom 4x/5x"
......doesn't work!

Can someone please tell me EXACTLY HOW to make a backup copy of the 05 cd?

It doesn't matter what software you use if your CD recorder doesn't support writing the protected format the original CD is in. You should check into that. I know the two I use most of the time will just not do it, even though one is a Sony.

Both data capture and data writing have to be in the same format. Secondly the media is most important. Last of all - what scorchie said.

You can be sure that its all trial and error.

Thanks guys!
ok, the recorder I have is a Pioneer DVD Writer (DVR-108) So does anyone know if my burner supports this task? or Which burner that you know of is capable of doing this?? cause I can try backing up the navi cd using friends computers.

And besides that, which "mode/format" should I use in Alcohol 120% in both reading and writing?

Plextor seems to kick butt with burning CD's. Hard to imagine anyone can justify that kind of cost. Best thing is to look around in Alcohol forums.

Try a slow write speed (e.g. 4x) - some type of CD readers have difficulty reading media written at high speed.

You can search on the internet and get a lot of informatoin on this (because that's how I found this out, through that and then finally experimentation and subsequent conclusion). I would just tell you but I don't remember all that info... it was a while ago. I believe several LiteOn drives were quite useful though. If you search here in the forum you can get the definitive answer to which copy protection is used (I posted it in the past).

Great!! I have a Liteon cd-writer, it's sitting right beside my computer.
It's the last cd writer I use before I upgrade to dvd.

I've tried searching the forum using every possible keywords that I can think of before I post this thread. and believe me, I've read every single one of them.
so far I know:
1) not every recorder works, Liteon might
2) must use Alcohol 120%
3) use 74min cd-r disc instead of 80min disc (?)
4) setting the reading speed at lowest possible (1x) and same for writing speed (4x)
5) selecting a format, scorchie I remember you metioned "securom" in another post, some suggested "safedisc" and other suggested "safedisc 2/3"

All I'm asking is to have someone who knows what he or she is talking about, tell me which "format" I should select in Alcohol? I need a definite answer!

Try Safedisc2/3. Also make sure you turn off overburn.

In that thread I corrected myself... check again. Sunman confused me because he had been talking about EPC discs earlier.

Back-up

D-5

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to backup my 04 NAV CD to use in my 02 W208. No luck.

I did alot of research, it seems that it all goes back to the CD writter you use. I tried 2 different writters so far, both not working, but I see different results when I use the CD in the CAR. One of them almost worked, it said wait while activated NAV ..... but then said change CD.

It is also depending on the firmware of the CD writter ... I'm doing more reading now, I will post back if I find anything.

D-5,
Regarding your burner, there's a firmware upgrade somewhere on the net for it. (I'll look for it later, i believe it was on some Euro' site).

Also, while I haven't tried to back up my MB disks....I was able to back-up my 2002 NavteQ disks for my Land Rover's Traffic Pro using, WINXP,DVR-108, Alcohol 120%, a Phillips CD-R.....using Safedisk 2/3 option....wrote image of disk to HD...then burned image to disk, (had no luck with "copy on the fly" method).

I'm waiting to purchase some newer Comand disks on eBay... I'll experiment with them on the DVR-108 when I receive them.

Yes, that's exactly what I see everytime I insert the copied discs, then waiting for miracle to happen... I've wasted so many cd-r discs!!
As for the firmware, I found a newer version v.118 as oppose to my v.114 in the pioneer website (430Man and Captret, thanks for mentioning!) I'll try backing up the navi cd again today.

Captret, don't about land rover cd, but I was able to back up my old 2002 MB navi cd easily using nero, "cd copy on the fly"

There is one thing I want to make sure first, is everyone positive that "safedisc 2/3" is the right way to back up comand disc?

Safedisc should be the right protection. I used A-Ray scanner. Its a utility that detects protection on CDs. It says its a Safedisc2/3 CD.

Post back and let me know if the firmware worked. I (Also) wasted so many CDs in the process. I'm now using the original and crossing my fingers.
