ID3 appears on normal Audio CD in 2006 MB
Hello, I have a 2006 CLS 55 and have played many regular audio CDs (all are originals--not burned MP3s) in my car over the last 5 months or so. I've never seen any metatag information (CD title, track title, etc) for any audio CD in all these months. I just assumed this was yet another lame feature of the Mercedes US electronic configuration (similar to the lack of US support for RDS).
About a week ago, I put in a 2001 CD from Shawn Colvin called "Whole New You" and amazingly, all the meta information shows up (song title, CD title, etc). I've still not found any other CD that will do this. Looking at the case, there is no special labeling indicating that there is special coding on this CD.
This is definitely not a data CD. Just to be sure, I played it in a cheap old CD player that I have at home and it played just fine. This appears to be a normal audio CD.
Any ideas on what is going on? In case anyone is curious, here is the Amazon info on this CD:
Product Details
* Audio CD (March 27, 2001)
* Number of Discs: 1
* Label: Sony
* Catalog: #69889
* ASIN: B000059Z81
* Average Customer Review: 4 out of 5 stars Based on 68 reviews. Write a review.
* Amazon.com Sales Rank: #7,846 in Music
As a side note, I have tried data CDs in my car and they do work. All *.mp3 files show up with all ID3 information.

In fact, if you burn your own audio CD with CD-TEXT enabled, you will see the title, track names, etc.!
My 2004 E-class with navigation has this feature too.

metatag data
Metatag, ID3 orID3V2 seems to be applied inconsistently. It has the potential to hold a great deal of information (including small graphics). MP3's nearly always adds the ID3 frame at the beginning of every track they should work if your player supports MP3's.
"most" newer players can interpet the metatag info but this data can be compressed (lyrics in other languages, rating systems, pictures) and your player may not know how to deal with it.
