Question ML Comand 2.0 TV for Australia

Hello all,
I have a 2001 ML320 with comand 2.0 in Australia.
When I push the TV button the screen says !No TV.
What is required to get TV operating ie TV tuner, cables
aerial etc. Also how much of that kit is built into comand and
the ML.

I have also seen the megacomm AV unit on the web and that provides AV input only so as to use the comand screen for
DVD/playstation/camera video. Does this unit provide TV tuning
capability?

Thank you in advance!

There is no standard loom for TV in ML. I have no idea why MB hasnt made one, it strikes me as an ideal vehicle to have the TV stuff with rear-screen (like S class etc)

You can take an E/CLK loom and modify it, or megacomm have their own. Im about to modify an S class loom (since it has rear TV sceen wiring) - but its more difficult than the E/CLK since the connectors at COMAND end are very different.

You need: -
Loom
TV Tuner
Antenna

The antenna can be put in the bumper or on rear windows. Clarion do an aftermarket aerial (apparently)

You can buy tuner from MB dealer, the tuner is the same across all models.

TV tuner has 2 auxiliary video inputs aswell

re loom for ML

Richard,
Thank you for your reply.
I agree with you. Most ML's as mine are purchased
as good family transport. In Australia we have long
distances between routes and as such some form
of entertainment for my 3 kids would be handy.
MB should think ahead!.

Anyway, you mentioned the loom from megacomm. I may also
look at the AV adapter. That way a third party tuner
is an option as well. Am I correct in that thinking?

Also Ted on this forum mentioned he had the adapters for sale.
Megacomm do not operate here and I will need to purchase
through a third party. I sent an email to him however as yet
no reply.

Do have any ideas on getting access to megacomm gear from
here?

Hi

Buy the MB tuner - you can get them for the same price [2nd hand] on ebay as the new megacomm tuner, but you can then use the controls on COMAND to do the tuning etc etc

Ive never bought anything from Megacomm. PM me with your email address, if you can work out how to use the site and ship to me in the UK, i'll hapilly ship it on to you.

The megacomm install I have seen puts the tuner above the passenger front footwell.
Alternatively [and possibly simpler] buy an E class loom from your dealer. Its about the right length to put the TV tuner on the left hand side in the trunk [assuming you have a MY2002 ML, theres space there]. You may have to extend the aerial cables, and will have to possibly extend some power leads out to the fuse box [or the back of the COMAND unit, which is easy]

Cheers

Re tuner

Richard,
Thank you for your offer of assistance.
I will look into, as per your advice, the
access to looms, cables etc available through my
local MB dealer. Do not hold your breath!
They at best here at least offer very little.
Will get back to you!

What is you opinion on an aerial?
Do after market work as well as original?
The ML has bags of options for placement.
I like the idea of in the guard.

Last question, How do you find ebay? The tuners are obviously
from Europe and are they cheaper than through MB?

Cheers!

Hi, MB dealer should be able to find it, its option 860 or 862 , so they just look on the parts slides for COMAND wiring loom with option 860/862

I dont yet have an opinion on the aerial - in all other MBs its built into the rear screen

Ebay is fine - you need to use Ebay Germany, and email the seller - most will ship around the world - but you have to send them Euros direct to Germany ... The tuners are about half price of a MB supplied one *but* they are no warranties - and you are so far away that Id buy new.

Also Ted on this forum mentioned he had the adapters for sale.

I have one Megacomm A/V adapter that I can sell if you want it. But It will be cheaper for you to buy it from Megacommm directly. It is however, a big hassle. The site is in german and they are supposed tyo have an english version of their site which is not yet operational. Any way after going through all the hassle, my A/V adapter is available for $600 US plus shipping.

re megacomm price

Ted,
Thanks for the offer however you are correct, the adapter is considerably cheaper from Megacomm themselves.
Also as you point out, they have no international site
and as such difficult to deal with. I may wait now till the
"new site" is available.

Have you used the adapter on a european comand 2.0.
Is it as simple as plugging in the two cables into the rear
of comand and pressing the TV button or does it require
MB intervention for configuration.

..............The connection is not difficult, but it requires enabling the TV function of the command using the Star diagnosis.

Hi Richard

I found a company called Braybrooks, who can fit the Merc TV Tuner and Alpine DVD changer to my C Class COMAND.
They quote me £2000 for the TV Tuner inc installation. and £1100 for the DVD Changer. Is this a reasonable figure for the TV Tuner?. It sounded a tad high to me, but I'm not sure..... I'm wondering whether I should buy the TV tuner separately and have them fit it......

Thanks

...........Actually, although I live in the US I have worked with Mr. Neil Brooks and found him to be reliable and a man of his word even across the Atlantic. I contacted him last year and it was refreshing to have an intelligent conversation with someone that actually works on MB's and knows what you are talking about.......unlike the MB dealers here in US. In any case my command with DVD/TV/6 DISC DVD CHANGER/PLAYSTATION 2 AND Windows based computer with wireless internet connection works perfectly. The price he quoted you is cheap for custom work. You can do it cheaper yourself by purchasing the individual components second hand from german ebay, but you will have to install them yourself and have no one to go if it does not work. To all components installed and have someone to run to and complain if it does not work, you are getting a bargain at 2000 British pounds.

Moser,
Maff has used Braybrooks and says they are excellent - a MB dealer will charge you same (or more) and probably do a worse job...
Its no easy install (lots of panel work to remove), and apparenltly Braybrooks guarantee no rattles ! Im also told that they will only use genuine MB parts and fit as though it was the factory - which is a good thing

Aux in ML Comand 2.0

Hi Tony,

I was following the answers you have been getting with great interest since I also own an ML320 with "!keine TV" message.

I agree with all that it is a great shame not to be able to simply add an MB TV tuner as in other models.

Does anyone know where is the Aux input on a 2000 ML320?

I hear that on CLKs is in the glove compartment but looking into mine, I could not find any inputs whatsoever.

At least that way I could listen to some MP3s.

Aux in ML Comand 2.0

Anthony,
I agree with your comments on ML not installed with TV/Video
cable capability. Of all the models MB make, the ML has room
and application for this capability. Anyhow it is possible!

As for the aux input, I assume it has a conector via the rear.
There may be more information at the megacomm site. the url
is http://www.megacomm.de/menu/menu_tel...omand/menu.htm
The site is in German however, I use translators on the web to
negotiate. They have pictures of comand 2.0 and name some of the outputs.

Cheers,

No Problem Moser!

The price could be droped quite a bit though if you bought your own parts (DVD player, tuner and cable).

With me supplying the parts Braybrooks charged roughly £300 for the install, however with the help of Richard, they learned a lot during the install of my car, which I guess the price reflects!

Thanks Maff

I should have bought a Tuner from Ebay.de , I guess.
I had already booked the car in though, so I left it with them. I guess I get their guarantee if anything goes wrong though..... great dealer!.

Did you get your motion sensors turned off? ie does your tv work when the car is on the move? They couldn't do it with mine, due to a software upgrade.
I need to get hold of the old STAR diagnostics software. Do you know anybody that has it?

Thanks

TV in ML

Hi Tony

I live in the UK and I seem to be one of the few who have had the TV and Nokia phone kit fitted to my Comand in an ML by MegaComm, and have the TV working whilst the car is moving..

I have had the two AV cables fitted as well.. one is for a DVD multi-changer, and the other for playback of video tapes.

I intend to fit a reversing camera to my 24ft trailer soon, and I will feed that to Comand by switching one of the AV inputs.

My current situation is trying to fit a NecVox rear drop down screen. I am going to get MegaComm to send me the RGB output cable for the tuner, and a RGB to Composite/RCA converter (only Mercedes rear screens take RGB feeds), unless I can get the parts in the UK.

I paid £1300 for supply and fit of the Mercedes TV with VDO Diversity rear screen aerials and two AV feed cables on 2 metres of RCA plugs.

Also fitted was the Nokia 6210 Handsfree kit for Comand at £650 (I supplied my own Mercedes phone console (in Orion Grey).

The Chunnel crossing cost me £160, and £65 for B&B in Celle Germany, and £90 of Diesel return trip, lunch in Celle cost 18 euros. Total cost £2277 for TV, AVs, and Nokia Handsfree.

One other thing.. Megacomm didn't change all the star codings, so some facilities were missing on my phone (SMS messages appearing on Comands display, and SMS alerts), and my AM radio reception lost about 50% of it signal strength.

Richard helped me with the star coding for the phone, but its looks as though I may have to go back to MegaComm to get the rear screen working, although I have just made contact with someone from Hove, Sussex, UK who seems to understand the Comand set up.

If I can be of any further help just shout. Perhaps I should contact Braybrooks about my rear screen and RGB feed.

Maff, where do I find Braybrooks, I can't find them via Yahoo

They will be able to sort you out. They have done many rear screens and sun visor screens using the MBTV Tuner outputs as well as Megacomm adapters. Speak to Neil.

They had 2 ML55's there whilst my CL was in there and they were adding sun visor screens to both of those.

2002 ML320 with Comand in Australia

Hi TonyN et al,

As some time has now passed since your original post I wonder if you can tell us what happened as I am in Brisbane, Australia and also have an ML320 with Comand and would like to use the TV and the AUX facilities if possible.

I can't find a plug socket in the glovebox of my ML but have found one in the glovebox of my CLK320.

Thanks in anticipation.

Gents, anything Comand can be done by Steve - I just had him here in Melbourne doing full TV tuner on my E55....Steve would be keen to get back to Aust soon and I would not be doing anything before talking to him first...Pricing is second to none...
