Are W210 Bose dash speakers supposed to function?

After a month of ownership, I just noticed that both dash speakers on my '03 W210 Wagon (w/ Bose) are not working. I only noticed because I was cleaning the inside of the windshield, and had my my ear close to the dash - otherwise the stereo sounds pretty decent.

Before I have this serviced, can somebody confirm that Bose doesn't intentiionally disable the dash speakers?

Thanks!

The dash speaker location is for the (optional) factory cellular phone.

The non-Bose tweeters are located in the sail panel (triangle on door by side view mirrors).

Bose moves the tweeters to the door with the woofer for better imaging. Sounds better to have your highs and mids coming from the same place. Sedans get two speakers in each front door, one in each rear door, and two in the back deck, for a total of 8. Wagons have a subwoofer in the back instead of the 2 back deck speakers.
