Google "m4p remove protection". I believe the preferred apps are Hymn and SoundTaxi. Alternatively, you can just burn the tunes to an audio CD and re-rip them, but you'll get some degradation along the way, as you're compressing the music a 2nd time. But iTunes m4p's are only 128 Kbps to start with (not so great), and wind & road noise, plus older ears tend to hide this degradation anyway, so I don't really hear any defects. Your sound system & aural acuity could be better than mine though.

Argh, 128kbps makes me crap myself.

I believe iTunes .mp4 format can actually be set to a higher quality in the settings, but I don't use iTunes for anything what so ever (at least, for right now).

You can change the iTune sampling rate to anything you want for songs that you rip yourself, but unfortunately the settings don't apply to purchased songs. They just come in at whatever the Apple iTunes Store decrees, which is always 128K for my purchases. If anyone knows of a way to change this, I'd love to hear it.

I convert purchased itunes m4p songs to mp3 songs by using a program, Tunebite. Essentially, it plays the songs digitally and records it into mp3 format. Works very well with no noticeable quality loss. By doing it this way, you preserve the ID3 tags (that indicate artist, album, etc) which you lose if you convert to audio cd first. All the copyright protection is removed from the m4p file.
