Adding nav to GL-450?

I just bought a GL-450 and am thinking about adding the nav if possible. When I look at the option on the mbz site it shows that the nav is $1350.00 and it is upgradeable by the dealer. I called and asked my local dealer about the labor cost. They told me parts and labor would be $2300.00. I was thinking of taking on this task myself as I have worked in the automotive field most of my life and have installed many sterio systems in my various cars.

So to my question. What do the upgrade parts consist of and is it a relatively easy installation. Is the vehicle prewired or do I just switch out the command unit? Do I need to add a gps antenna? Does it matter that it had a 6 disk changer already?

TIA for the help, Larry

I have Command with Nav in the SLK and I would still take my Garmin on any extended trip. The Nav in my new Lexus is a little better but still, you can't get routes and waypoints into the car and can't get track records out of the car.

The Garmin and the accompanied Mapsource SW allow all these operations plus interface to Google Earth. Plus, you can take it on a trip and use it in the rental car. They already have versions with XM NavTraffic. The annual map update is only $75.

Mercedes Nav is not very good

I wouldn't bother with the MB Nav.

My 07 Nav is nowhere not as good as the one in my BMW and way distant from any of the Garmins that I have used. If I was taking a serious trip I would certainly take a Garmin and forget about the Comand Nav.

1000 dollars in labor to install a nav in your car is way too much. you need to find another dealer.

also you do not need a new antena we install a spliter is the easyest way to put it and we add to the command we take the blank command out of the dummy plate about the cd slot
