will changing headunit really increase quality?

i have the C320 with the stock 10 speaker bose system. my ear isn't too sensitive, so i'm wondering if i'll notice the difference if i change to an aftermarket headunit?

i think the head unit can make a difference in sound quality. it also depends on what source your head unit has. if it doesnt have a cd player and you put a new one in w/ a cd player, you can make your own judgement.

Seven years ago, I changed only the head unit at S500 having
Bose speakers. As I remember I payed more than $1,000
to get new hu. The result? Quite disappointed. No big difference.
After that, I don't believe any dramatic change given by head unit
(here I mean pre-amp by head unit).

Fix what is closest to your ears first. So first change the speakers. Go with high quality, name-brand, close to top-of-the-range speakers. Next, buy high quality amplifiers. Get ones which are more powerful than what you need and have low THD ratings (total harmonic distortion). Next, get a head unit that has low distortion output, has all the features you want, and that you like the look of sitting in your dash. Finally, have it professionally installed (either do it yourself in a professional manner or pay a professional to do it).

With Bose systems, everything is tuned. The Bose amplifiers are tuned to the physical properties of speakers they use. The head unit is tuned to the properties of the amps. Because of this, if you try to use the Bose amps with different speakers, they won't sound right. If you try to hook up a different head unit to their amps and speakers, it might sound okay, but it's not going to sound any better than the Bose unit did.

No, it will not. The signal to the BOSE sound is optical/digital. Therefore its a matter of which amplifier you have installed and the speakers of course.
