amplifier subwoofer Q's

hello

i have a precision power pc 275 amplifier with a jl audio 12 w 0-4 set up in my mercs 500sel, in a small sealed box.
everything was well until through age and wear and tear the woofer got some holes in it.
so now i am in the market for a new woofer and wondering what to get.
i am not sure how my amp is setup, i was told it can run at these differnt set ups, (75X2@4ohms rms, 150X2@2ohms rms, 300X1@4ohms rms bridged)

i want to assume it is running at 300 because it is the only speaker hooked up with that amp. But what can i look at on the amp that will tell me that

also what is a good speaker that will atleast give me the performance i had with the JLaudio.
i just want a solid strong sound, nothing crazy

thanks for advice

it's almost certainly bridged there's two channels so two sets of inputs. bridging is usually the positive form one channel and the negative from the other

pathetic attempt at speaker wiring ascii:
+ - + -
*____*

if you hook up a multimeter on DC 12V and test the impedance you'll probably see a 3ohm load since most jl-audio's are in that range.

OZ audio are some of the best speakers for the price. very musical with pretty amazing spl for low power. they are also very cheap since they never really made it big mainstream but are some really nice "sound quality" subs. i've been out of it for so long though i would take my recommendation with a grain of salt. :P

yeah i guess it must be

does this mean it is running the 300 times 1 at rms or peak.

the sub is suppposed to be 125 rms, so im wondering if the amp can run at 300rms, i should get the 12 w3 which is 300rms

300 x 1 rms. peak is probably around 500. those older ppi amps are great little pieces of gear. if you have a 3-3.5ohm sub you probably get a bit closer to 350wrms out of that amp.

yes, i would get the sub made for 300rms. overpowering isnt a problem in the case of your 125w sub as it just means you have more headroom, as long as you dont crazy with the gains.

i need to figure out how my impedance is set tho.
i dont have a volt meter

impedance isnt set...it's just the resistance of electrical flow through your speaker. it also changes depending on frequency so they rate it as nominal impedance...what the impedance is most of the time.

the 12w3 i think has 2 voice coils, so you would want dual 8ohm or dual 2ohm. dual 8ohm wired in parallel gives a 4ohm load and dual 2ohm wired in series gives 4ohm.
