I did a bit of research on this after getting a LIDAR ticket a few months ago. I currently have an Escort 9500i (their flagship) that supposedly has laser detection. I can tell you that unless you are lucky enough that the cop aims the laser right at your detector, even then you will only get an alert that basically tells you "you just got busted"! If your goal is to beat laser, detection won't do you any good. You must have an active jamming system. After researching this, I found the only consistantly successful system out there is the Escort "Shifter ZR3" It goes for about $350 and requires some installation time. You basically need to mount two transmitters/detectors in the front bumper (and run wires to them) and one transmitter/detector in the rear bumper. Almost always the cops will aim the LIDAR gun at your front or rear license plate area. This is why you place them there. The Shifter ZR3 is called "Shifter" only because Escort thinks the word "jammer" is a bit politically incorrect! But it is a very good jammer. This unit also will integrate with any existing Escort radar detector nicely.
I've heard good things about the Valentine unit, but if you want to be fully protected (don't speed!

) you need laser counter-measures. Here in CA I'm seeing the laser (LIDAR) being used more and more. It got me about 3 months ago and the radar/laser detector never made a sound. The 9500i has worked awesome though so far for conventional radar (almost all Ka band in CA),
Hope this info helps for some of the folks out there.
