Does Mercedes come out with yearly updates for the Navigation CD's? If not has anyone replaced the factory navigation system with an aftermarket system.

The best place to get updates for your '02 is the dealer. See https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...6#post2362066; I believe the last update for CD-based units was January '07.
Some contributors have updated their nav systems. What you cannot do is install a system designed for the MOST fiber optics bus into your car, which has a D2B fiber optics system.
You can have 3rd party systems installed; I suggest searches using terms "Pioneer" "AVIC" "Kenwood" and other brand or model names to see what has been done. There are a large number of post about these, and the search tool will get you to them.
Don't forget the "related posts" section at the bottom of the pages that the searches reveal.
