CD Changer Skipping
CD Changer Skipping
Since I've picked up the car, the CD player has been skipping. It's been to the dealer twice, personally I think it's the horizontal/vertical setting, but dealer at the two visits wrote:
1) couldn't recreate problem,
2) skipping because you're using home created cd's, should be using store bought cds...
Now, especially for #2, that sounds like a crock of sh!@. What do you guys think? I'm bringing it in on the 27th and not gonna take it back till they fix the cd player, which skips at the slightest bump on the road.

I thought that only me having skipping problem. I didn't complain, since installed a changer myself and bought it from ebay. I'm pretty sure that orientation pins set right for my case. It doesn't skip all time, only when I cross railroads on slow speed. Skipping happen more frequently for home made disk, but it happens for any others disks too. Let us known if a dealer could fix the problem.
I've been through 3 changers on my CLK55, two on my wife's E320. Got a run-around once with the 55 (service advisor questioned condition of the CD's in the changer at the time I brought it in). Brought 6 brand new still in the shrink wrap CD's with me & took the advisor for a ride when I picked up my car.
One bumpy driveway exit later Ihe was convinced that he needed to replace my changer. 1 year/40k miles later & no (knock on wood) repeat of the skipping problem.

#2 on your dealer's list may be correct. CD players not specifically made to play homemade CD's may skip frequently or simply not play them at all. I believe the manual states not to use those types of CD's in the player (someone may need to double check me on that one).
Of course, there is always a simpler solution, cleaning a CD makes it track immeasurably better.
Good luck.

Hi Safet,
I had the same problem too, and the dealer ended up replacing the changer (the cartridge was also stuck). The guy in charge of installing the changers said they are very sensitive, and he sees them skip the most when playing a home-burned CD. He also said it happens more frequently when low profile tires are used as the ride is a little more harsh.
Good Luck!

I have made about 100 cds at home.
I admit home-made cds are more sensitive to cd player.
But I also find out that home-made cd's sensitiveness
depends on r-cd brands and cd-rom driver.
I don't use cheap bulk r-cds anymore.
For coping job , I use now only Sony CD-rom driver.
And no more problem.
But "skips on bumps" - I have never got such problem on MB
cars. I belive your cd player should be changed as a memory
part for anti-skip is out of order.
