Trouble Backing Up Navigation DVD
Hi All,
I recently decided to try to do a straight copy of my navigation DVD in case anything was to happen to the original disc. I tried multiple times but so far I've had bad luck.
The disc is over 4.7 GB so I'm using Memorex DVD+R DL discs. I was able to successfully burn a direct copy using Nero, but when I pop it in my car, I get an error saying to check the disc.
I've read up a bit and the only thing I can find thats even a clue, is that I have to change the book type to DVD-ROM when I burn, and the only way to do that is to use a special utility that may or may not work on my burner because its hardware specific.
Can anyone else shed some light on how to copy one of the newer dual layer navigation DVDs?

Which media did you use? It is pretty hard to find DL DVD media that the navi processor reads.
In any case, I would use the original disc in the car because a copy stresses the DVD drive and those are prone to fail even with original discs. A backup copy at home is OK in my opinion, if the original fails for some odd reason.

I wonder if a product like anydvd would help with that. It takes care of pretty much every kind of protection when backing up my dvd collection.

There's no encryption. Memorex sucks, that's your problem.
I use alcohol 120% or some similar program to make an ISO and then use a Verbatim disk (the ONLY decent DL disks out there). Hope that helps.

You need to make a .ISO (image) of the original DVD then burn it on a DVD+R DL ..mine works.
Use MagicISO software from www.downloads.com or cnet

I had no problem with DVD+R DL media with Ashampoo Burning Studio. I think the key here is to make an ISO image and burn it. Don't just do a disc to disc copy. I've been running the backup for months. I was worried since we have so many potholes here in Wisconsin that the original would get all banged up.
