Digital Noise from W211 H/K COMAND?
Has anyone else noticed that the W211 (2003-2008) COMAND unit with H/K will product digital "static" if turned to max volume when no audio is playing from the selected source (i.e. press AUX and turn the volume all the way up)? My system does this when playing from the iPod Integration Kit (and with the iPod physically disconnected) when there are quiet passages in music and the volume is turned up to compensate for the volume decrease from the AUX port. Also, I have noticed this in some DVD movies during silent passages.
Therefore, it seems that the COMAND is producing this noise. The CD-Changer does not produce it, and neither from the limited testing I can perform the tuner or SDARs unit do they product it. Since the COMAND will be doing analog to digital conversion for the AUX port and will also provide the audio for the CD 0 slot, I think I have narrowed it down to the COMAND unit. Since the changer doesn't seem to do it, it seems that the MOST ring going to the rear of the car as well as the components involved to not have any issues inducing the noise.
I have turned up the volume on a friends 2008 E350 on AUX (also with iPod disconnected) and I can hear it there to. I can hear it the most when the volume is turned up to about 98% (turn the volume to MAX and back off about two "notches" on the volume dial) and when Logic 7 is engaged, and the majority of it comes from the subwoofer and resembles very faint radio static. In fact it is so faint that you would almost certainly need to have the car off and parked to sense its presence.
As a side note, I have two COMANDs, and they both produce the same results. As a test and when I get time, I may produce a CD with all zeros as an audio track and compare the COMAND playback to the Changer to support my theory.
I think if there was a fiber issue from the COMAND to the CD-Changer I would get additional malfunctions and problems in addition to this.
