chrome key vs. original key adapting ?

hi,

I'd like to know if there is a possibility to build the microchip from a older smartkey into the housing of a new (chrome) smartkey.

ex: I want to build the internal software chip from the lower key into the housing of the upper key

it's because I have a chrome smartkey laying around here , a broken one from my job, car was in garantee so customer got a new one...
also, I drive a W203 wagon, and it's not yet possible to order a chrome key for a wagon... however, for a sedan it is possible :s

has anyone a DIY or has anyone done this before?

since I work in a MB garage ... i have looked it up a few times, and, at the moment, they are still normal one's...

it could be they send a chrome, but we haven't yet ordered one for someone else so ... and i'm not gonna spend 200 € yet, because i have a chrome key here. it is a "broken" one, but i thouht i might be able to put in the control-unit (or whatever it's called) from the normal black one in the chrome one ...

All depends on your skills and how comfortable you are opening up both keys to see if you can do a swap.

Hey guys,

Check out post #730 on this thread:

https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...-class-15.html

Although I haven't done this myself (was thinking of doing it), it appears as though it's possible. But you'll need to take the two boards to a welder / someone with a hot air station.

Let me know if any of you do this to your keys.

Michael

all new benz keys are the chrome type. it has nothing to do with the model range... as long as the car has a IR/smartkey any new key ordered will be a chrome one. they dont even build the old plastic ones any longer

Another problem with swapping the innards: the mechanical key is different. Your old blade key won't fit into the chrome key.

I agree that all new keys are the chrome kind, so just order one.

DO a search : I read in this forum : someone in Spain had swap the chip from the old key to the new key (chrome), with pictures & instructions, you need to have a skill in electronic to remove the chip out the OLD key, then weld it in the slot of the new (chrome key). Good luck.

Here's a LINK to that PDF Mike, and I'm emailing it to you as well. Maybe you'll send me the next "broken" chrome key you come across and I'll try it too!

I am having the same problem that Whoover mentioned, the mechanical keys are different. I sent a email to my service advisor and am waiting to see how much Mercedes will charge to either program the remote and cut a new mechanical key, or what will the costs be for a new key.

You can order the mechanical key for any style key it should be less than 10 dollars.

203-766-50-06 Chrome style key Version 1

212-760-19-06 updated Chrome style key with triangle panic button Version 2

The transplant is not easy unless you have experience doing things with small circuit boards/soldering.

If you woud like to order the chrome style wagon 2 button remote with version 2 which is better because it doesnt crack as much try this part# combo, give it to the dealer if they are having trouble.
