DVD navigation help
I just bought 2007 E550 with DVD Command Navigation.
DVD seems to work but there is no disk in the dvd drive (in the trunk)
Is this right? I thought maps are data are read from DVD directly, and there is no hard disk.
How would I find out what version of map data I have.
Can I use the latest version Mercedes-Benz Harman Becker COMAND - North America Map DVD v.8.0 without any update to the firmware?
Thanks.

There is no hard drive in that vehicle, you need a disk. some require an update depending on the disk that was in the vehicle before the new disk.

Hmm, that's why I was asking.
There is no disk in the Navigation DVD drive, but GPS works.
Shouldn't it say there is no disk, and not work?
Can someone with 2007 E class cofirm this?
Thanks.

With all the road construction around Tampa, I recommend the latest disc. Be aware, though, that the database for the discs lags actual road construction. For example, the downtown roads are OK, but the changes opened in September '08 at the Bruce B. Downs and I-75 intersection aren't in the system yet.

My salesman today showed me how to eject the DVD disk.
The eject button needs to be hold down until the disk comes out.
I do need the updated disk.
It looks like there are different versions based on the model of the car.
Does anyone have the latest disk for 2007 E550? and provide an input on how good the data is?
Also, is there any update to the GPS software itself, not the map data?

And the latest disc can be found at the NavTeq link I gave in post #6. You are also able to see a list of locations with significant changes once you get to the version for your car.

It looks like this is the latest for 2007 E class:
Mercedes-Benz Harman Becker COMAND - North America Map DVD v.8.0
- Release Date November 2008
- Catalog # U0028-0070-809
My friend just upgrade map on his 2003 m5 which added bird's eye view.
BTW, the GPS in his car looks almost same as mine including the software menu and interface.

That is the DVD I have, and it provides a "Bird's Eye View" option - but every disc I have had for my '05 provided that option. It is not specific to a particular DVD. Did you use the "Display" and then "View" option menu that you get when you have either "Nav" or "Map" functions activated? Your COMAND manual discusses how to do this.
Do not let appearances fool you regarding COMANDS, especially assuming that a BMW's works like a Mercedes. Even different models of COMAND in Mercedes do not work just alike.
BTW - it's a matter of preference - but I find the 2D display oriented to the car's heading to be the clearest and most easily understood. To me, the Bird's Eye View is an interesting gimmick, but nothing more.
Selling you a copy of a copyrighted DVD is blatant piracy, and could subject you and the seller to criminal penalties, whether the Board allows it or not.

I have 3 garmin nuvis and have updated map on each one. Basically, I have paid Navteq 6 times for map software, but that's ok.

I just checked my GPS some more.
It looks like it does not have 3D view mode.
I think I have seen somewhere 2007 E class should have 3D view.
Does anyone know if new DVD disk will actaully add this capability as well?
I have seen ref. to new E class having NTG 2.5. Which version does 2007 have? I searched everywhere and couldn't find this info.
Thanks.

Again, 3D (Bird's eye view) mode is not disc-specific. The nav DVDs will update nav firmware, but not your COMAND. Ask your dealer if a firmware update for your COMAND unit will provide it.

is the latest DVD map worth the money? my 2007 DVD nav directs you to the block of number instead to the exact house number for a DVD navigation. That is pretty ****ty in any standard. my $99 portable unit directs me to the front of the address. Not the beginning of the block.
