What electronic test equipment do you own/use?

What electronic test equipment do you own/use?
My old 300D has so little wiring you can almost count the wires.
Now that I'm planning to get a 230C, there's a lot of electronic.
I read on this forum that you will eventually get error code messages.
Do you always go to a dealer or to a repair shop with this?
Or do you have your own test equipment so you get an idea what's going on even if you're on a trip in the backwoods? I'm a desert fan, and would like to have a good feel what my car is "thinking"
