5878 or 6131 Bluetooth module?
Please don't flame I've just spent the past 2 weeks trying to find out the difference between these and haven't found a simple, definitive answer.
I'm looking for a BT puck, and know that I should at least get a 5878, and not a 5839. However, I've seen references to the 6131. What is the 6131 and should I get it over the 5878? I have an iPhone 3G and will eventually be getting a 3GS.
I've seen conflicting things -- some people say get the 5878, not the 6131, and others say don't get the 6131 as it is VPC only (not sure what this means) but that it is the module for the '09s, so if you are buying off eBay it maybe a module "removed" from a MY '09 car.
What are the differences between these, and as of July 18th, 2009, which one should I get?
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.
The only information I have is at http://www.wireless4mb.com/page18/as...ones7-2009.pdf which deals with phone and firmware compatibility of the two modules. The AWS site also has the pairing instructions for the two modules - but differences are not clear. See http://www.wireless4mb.com/ You could call AWS to see if there are any significant differences - if so, let us know.
VPC is MB's Vehicle Preparation Center at each port of entry. Often, the VPC will install options that are ordered, but have not been installed at the factory (electronics such as handsfree systems and Sirius radios, for example). Sometimes parts are made available only to the VPC and not to the dealer network. The 6131 may well be a VPC-restricted part, because AWS offers the 5878 module for sale (together with installation instructions, operators instructions, and pairing instructions), but does not offer the 6131 for sale, and offers only pairing instructions.
It is likely the functionality is the same between the two - it certainly seems so from the material I could find. As to which you should buy - do you like silver and blue, or do you like plain black? Either would be a better choice than the 5839, which has older firmware that is compatible with fewer phones than the 5878 or the 6131.

The 6131 is the newest one and will have the most phone compatibility. You cannot get them from the dealer though as sky said its a VPC only item. I have seen them on ebay though. The 5839 was the first gen adapter and it has a smaller amount of supported phones including the iphone. If you plan to use the iphone I would suggest either the the 5878 or the 6131 if you can get your hands on it. Some people that are buying the 6131's are getting them direct from the vendor which I forget who it's from at the moment, but MB doesn't make it.

The entire part numbers are
B6 787 5878
and probably
B6 787 6131
Both numbers are good at this Mercedes dealer's website (don't enter B)
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...?siteid=214660
These means you can "get them" from a Mercedes dealer.

Do you just base this off the fact that their website shows it ? I doubt their website is intuitive enough or is integrated with MB's master which clearly states that is blocked from ordering and to order 6-7-87-5878 other websites show this too they just pull a list of part numbers with prices. It doesn't show real time information or completely accurate data for that matter.
