w210 1999 Head Replacement
I have a 1999 320 E factory Head with 6 disc changer in the trunk.
I want to replace the head unit with one that will allow me to plug in an iPod directly. I have looked at the Becker aux-in modification but am turned off by the idea of the tape drive churning away
I don't care about the 6 disc changer as it is broken and I will remove it.Perhaps i can use the disc changer's output somehow?
I currently use an iPod with a radio transmitter but the sound quality is not very good. I also think it looks untidy.
Other than size are there any restrictions or tricks to what unit I can replace the factory head unit with?
I have read conflicting information that there is a Bose amplifier hiding in the car somewhere that may cause volume issues but cannot find consistent information on this. Apparently there is a bose amplifier in the trunk. Unless this was an option...
I then followed up with...
I've looked through a lot more posts and still have a few questions and observations.
Apparently there is a Bose amplifier in the trunk of the car but I have a few questions about it.
* was it standard equipment?
* in the 1999 w210 is it attached by fibre optic cable?
* which speakers does it amplify the signal for?
It seems that a volkswagen adapter is the way to go but I have a few questions about this too.
* I understand that it depends on the head you want to attach but are there any aftermarket manufacturers that are not supported?
* The gain has to be set down(?) to put the volume in a useable range but other than this will the current speaker set-up work with an aftermarket head?
Has anyone installed a single din head unit?
Does anyone know any MB friendly head units (even if they are more expensive?
