To use the system, a mobile phone is placed in a special cradle which is connected with the telephone control unit. The mobile phone is then linked with the on-board network and can be operated using the multi-functional steering wheel, hands-free system and a proprietary operating system developed by Motorola called COMAND. An additional display system (combi-display) will be placed on the dashboard of the vehicle, and allows for reading and editing of SMS messages through COMAND.
Additionally, a hands-free system will operate using the vehicle's on-board audio system which the two companies say will provide improved speech quality courtesy of an integrated microphone underneath the interior roof light. Upon replacing their mobile phone, customers will be able to obtain the appropriate cradle from Mercedes-Benz Accessories and exchange it themselves. Installation of the Universal Handy Interface into other Mercedes-Benz automobile series is planned for 2004.

which car do you have. I have a 03 c320 and I am retrofitting a UHI in it next week hopefully. As long as it uses d2b Fiber optics in the car, it should be fine. I believe cars after 98 had this.

sunman,
Would you be willing to share your experiences with UHI? ALso, where would I be able to secure both the UHI interface and find a factory GSM antenna upgrade? I have an 02 S430 with the V60 phone and ATTWS service. My wife would really like to be able to use her MPx200 Smartphone instead of the V60. ANy info you can supply would be greatly appreciated.
I see you are in Texas. Are you by chance in Dallas, or are you in Houston?

Unfortunatly, the UHI will not support the MPXX phone. It will support v60 GSM phones from ATT though! Go to www.mikbox.com and he can probably help you. As for your antenna, I suggest a Hirschmann Glass mount antenna. It mounts on the inside of the rear glass and is not visible at all from inside or outside. It hides behind the trim. I have it on my c class and it works fine. You will not be able to find the GSM replacement here in the states. Do you have a Motorola Phone kit installed in the car already? If you do then you are a perfect canditate for the MikBox.

Yes, my wife's car does have the current Motorola V60 setup installed and it actually works. With ATTWS and Cingular really muddying up the waters with their push to get to GSM850 systemwide AND retiring TDMA, I am really starting to look for alternatives.
In referencing the GSM versions of the V60, I'm assuming that you are talking about phones like the V60i or V60g. Both of these phones are tri-band GSM phones (meaning they would work here as well as in Europe and other GSM countries). Of course, those still don't deal with the problematic GSM850 issue. That said, the Motorola V400 is a quad-band phone that would address the GSM850 issue. Then, the question becomes, is the pin-out of the connector for the V400 the same as the V300 that Mik already has working? Ah the joys of product development (especially in a vacuum!).
I am on Mik's list and will work with him on this as I do not want to loose the phone capability in my VERY EXPENSIVE car!
BTW, do you have an EPC that includes antenna parts for W220 class cars? If so, do any of the integrated antennas support GSM850/900/1800/1900? If so, can you send me the part number? Then I just need to find a source in Europe. Thanks again.
