2006 E500 4matic Wagon
Options for 1998 E Radio Replacement

The factory radio in my 1998 E320 4matic is done, I fear! When I bought the car in January, I noticed that the volume control was extremely irratic, sometimes getting very loud when the knob was hardly turned, and others barely getting louder or softer with adjustment. I have the premium sound, so is this a Bose radio?

Now, since yesterday, it is as if I have lost all control over my bass and treble settings. Music sounds tinny, and when I try to adjust the bass or treble settings, nothing changes in the music quality. I hope this is radio-related and not speaker related. I doubt the premium sound is covered by Starmark.

I was going to spring for the factory CD changer, but now I'm thinking that since I probably need a new radio, if I could get an in-dash CD, I would be more than happy.

I have read about the Harmon-Kardon traffic pro, which would give me a nav system, satellite radio, and an in-dash CD player. I also like that this fits within the factory dashboard. I cringe at the idea of putting something aftermarket on the car since I am a fanatic about the factory appearance.

I know nothing about stereo systems. I can get items for cost and no labor at the dealership (I have an "in" ), but the question is what to get. I would really appreciate any advice you could spare.

Thanks!
