cl 55 xm antenna problem Help please

2003 cl 55 we installed xm satilite radio but we can't seem to have a good antenna . or one that's good looking enough to put on the car. we tried puting in the car but can't seem to get the signal through the glass only a small section on the very rear glass near the top. that signal was poor as well. But I just can't see puting the antenna on the body any input would be great........radio shops welcome.

beautiful car...

I'm not sure but I read/heard that the CLs have the GPS antenna on the trunk lid. Usually, like in the 208 CLKs and other cars that with GPS, the antennas are external and can be seen. I might be very wrong with this but I haven't observed an external antenna on the CL or S. Therefore, maybe placing the XM antenna where the GPS antenna is also located may work. If the GPS antenna was in the trunk lid, then maybe that portion of the trunk is 'thinned out' to allow the signal to penetrate. Again, this is only a theory and I am probably more wrong than right. Good luck.

............In most cars that do not have aftermarket tinted windows, the XM antenna can be placed behind the rear passenger headres and it works fine even when the rear window sunshades are deployed. Aftermarket tinting materials have matallic components in them that significantly degrades the signal and makes it impractical to place the XM antenna behind the rear passenger headrest. I imagine that since you are having a similar problem with your CL that the rear windhield on the CL must have metallic components. A solution to this problem in my 300Ce was to buy a the smallest satellite antenna possible that looks like a small computer mouse and place it at the junction of the front windshield and the dash. Does not look as nice as if it were placed in the rear, but definitely nicer than placing it on outside on the car.

Thanks for both of your replies I have tried it on both places in the rear and in the front dash area but the signal through the rear glass was not existent the signal through the front was a little better. The next thing I am going to try is the outside in the winshield well were the wipers park??? not sure if the signal will be seen there . still open for some expert opinions or any solution that would work and not take away from the overall look of the lines of this vehicle. Thanks all that have responded........

.........assuming you are able to find a good way to wire the antenna from the windsheild well to the XM box in your car, there should be no why the antenna won't work.

I am having a similar problem, I have my antenna on my cargo cover in my back and am getting terrible reception, using a terk antenna... I am tempted to try and locate it next to my GPS antenna in my dash so my question is does anyone know the best atenna to use, ie the Terk, Sony Pioneer, etc?

xm antenna cl55

What we did was hold the antenna up at the very top of the rear back window in the center and drove around that way for a while.
Bingo that was the spot on the inside it's a terk antenna shaped like a little rectangle. Unfortunatly you have to mount it upside down to get it to work correctly, but were are going to do is paint the back black so it has a finished look. At the very top off the glass
there is no interference and we almost never lost the signal.

I believe that the S and CL have infrared reflecting glass. I think this is were the problem comes from.. There is only 1 place just below the rear view mirror in the front and i spot can't remember in the rear where it is that the signal can get through..

Hope this helps
