K40 vs. Passport SRX Remote

I would appreciate comments from those with experience with either of these radar detectors and laser diffusers. Installation will be in CL55. The always on mode of the K40 laser diffuser is a bit of a concern, as I would like to be able to permit lock-on at my option.

Well, I've got the SRX in my SLK. I love it. It's saved my butt countless times both from both Laser and Radar threats. The Laser jamming is awesome.

As for the install... It's not too bad, the only real issue is getting the wires run. In the SLK, running the cable for the rear laser shifter was a PITA and getting the front cables (radar reciever, and laser shifters) to the center console is a little annoying because of all the panels that have to be removed but its not too bad. And the wiring is simple (as long as you know the right wires going to the radio).

Dave:
Where did you mount the control/display module? I was thinking of mounting it in the ashtray area so that I could connceal it when I close the tray cover. The dimensions of the module on the Passport website indicate that it will fit easily in the ashtray area, although the ashtray itself will probably have to be removed, but that is no big deal because I don't use it anyway. Of course, the display will be out of my direct line of sight when driving, but I assume that the audible signal will be loud enough for an alert.
Finally, most installers in the Boston area do not sell the Passport SRX remote. One auto dealer that does told me that they lose money on each installation becuase it takes something like 12 hours to install and the total cost is about $1500. Can you buy direct form Passport and if so, how much is the unit? Thanks.

12 hours?! Wow, that is one slow working installer. Took me a couple hours, but no more than 3-4. And thats just because getting the wires from point 'A' to point 'B' was a pain. The actual electrical work is a cinch (granted you know the right colored wires). One thing that you need to keep in mind is that the laser shifters need to have 100% unobstructed view.

The display is actual quite small, its not nearly as deep as you would think. It will fit in a lot of places... here's a picture of the placement on my SLK (This isn't my car, nor is it an SRX, but the display is the exact same size. Credit: Periokid, www.slk32.com)

Yes, you can by direct from Escort, just give them a call. I live 15 minutes from the Escort home office, and know an employee so I got a discount on mine... I'm guessing that its probably around $800 without the install included.

..........The install you have is easy. Where it takes a lot of time is when you want the display to be etched into your rear view mirror. The mirror work alone takes 4 hours. And you have to dismantale the display unit to do this.
