Question Installing 2000 Radio on a 1998!

I bought a radio which was originally installed on a year 2000 CLK and I am trying to install this on my 1998 SLK. Dimenstions and Connections are exactly the same but the only problem is that it wouldn't recognize my CD-Changer (it shows no cd changer when I press the CD button).

Any soultion?

Thanks,

Mike

Because if your new head unit is D2P, then you need a fiber optic Cd changer.

Can you tell me if this unit is a D2P or not? I have attached a picture of the back of this unit.

Yes, it is. You see that green thing with a handle. That's where the fiber optic cable goes, I think. Well, go to eBay to bid one. I got one for 275.

I have one for sale on eBay right now. The one you have is the fiber-optic one, won't work with your CD-changer.

If you're interested, pls let me know

If you have a 98 or earlier model (except for the S, which go non-optical til 99), if you decide to use optical-CD changer control stereo, and the Optical CD changer, you will have to rerun the wire.
The current wire on the pre 99 model won't support optical stereo device.

I'm curious to know how this works out for you... that radio is expecting CANBUS on the C-connector, and if it from a 2000 CLK it should get ignition signal over CANBUS. That's why there are 5 pins on the C-connector.

Since your car doesn't have CANBUS on the C-connector, I would guess that the radio will shut down after it's "ignition off" shutdown time (generally 30 minutes).

Let us know how it goes.

I'm curious too, mostly the last comment about the C connector and CANBUS. This is a good time for me to ask, what is CANBUS, anyway? What does it do?

I have an Audio 10 (CD) in my 96 S420 which has the identical pins as shown in the pic, and it works fine. Of course I don't use the fiber optic, but then my car doesn't have any of the features supported by the fiber optic, including CD changer. This is interesting!

Are you just casually saying it has the same pins as shown in the pic, or do you know for a fact that the C-connector actually has 5 pins vs. 3 pins in a non-CANBUS head unit?

I can say for a fact because I just double checked. Five pins on the C connector just like the picture.

What does CANBUS do?

The radio by it self (without the cd changer) works perfectly. By that I mean the radio, tape, and speakers are working. The problem is that when I press CD it shows me NO CD CHANGER.
