NAV DVD Drive W211 2007
Can the drive in the trunk be replaced with an industry standard DVD unit?
Has anyone tried interfacing a HDD, SSD, or Flash card reader to replace it?

you can't, the audio gateway and the command can not accommodate it and there was nothing from the factory technology wise to add to it (ipod kit was even a bandaid)
you can either find a 09 command and amplifier and rewire it
or
replace with an aftermarket unit which there is a whole article on "replacing the command is made easy" a few articles below this one in this section

I am not trying to add a HDD or SSD for music. Just thinking if the DVD drive goes belly-up, it would be easier to throw the NAV flies on 5 Gig worth of HDD or Flash then to buy a DVD drive.
If all I want is better Nav functionality and to replace a failed (rear/NAV) DVD drive, how much of the 09 system do I need to put in?
