New nav vs. old nav.

Can 2001 cars use 2003 nav discs with no problem?

The reason why I ask is I have a 2001 S Class and was playing with my buddy's 2003 CLK nav. I like the interface better and the way the unit works.

Will updating the nav disc give me this new functionality? Can I just use the new nav discs?

Thanks

If I remember correctly, your friend's 2003 is DVD based. Yours might be CD ROM based. So, not go. Unless you change your Command to the latest one.

2003 CLK's still use CD based nav and thus should use the same discs. You might want to get your firmware updated as this added some functionality

How do I update the firmware? Dealer?

Can I just burn his disc and throw it in there?

My bad ! I thought somewhere I read that Mercedes is moving to DVD Command system in either 03 or 04 models. Guess it's not 03 yet. You can try to burn it and see if it works. But I don't know if you have to put the code in afterward to make things going. Make sure your friend has his code card handy just in case when you do that.

Actually, the 04 CLK will still have CD Nav. In 2004, the DVD Nav already in the E will be offered in the CL and S classes. Interestingly enough, Turbo2 has said that while the 3-D Bird's Eye View Mode will not be in the E-Class DVD Nav until 2005, it will be in the DVD Nav systems of the CL and S in 2004. That was a bit of a shocker to me, but it's good to see it coming since I think that view mode can be very helpful (I've used Nav systems with it before).

I have the 2001 nav disk, and to be honest the interface is rather bland, especially compared to the newer Nav systems on Japanese cars. ie I can only see the name of the street I am currently driving on, and not those that I am crossing or are nearby. The newest cd version seems to be 7/2002. Anyone know how the newer disk compares to the older one?
