Audio 20 Cassette and CD Changer issue

Audio 20 Cassette and CD Changer issue
I have an audio issue with an '03 E240 with the stereo (Audio 20 Cassette). It is displaying ------ (6-dashes). These disappear after a short period and then return in a cycle of three times, before the unit powers off. I can hear some kind of noise from the changer during this. I am guessing that it is trying to initialise, but fails to do so.
There are also no LED's lit on the seperate CD changer (after seperating the device from the door (see below)
I have tried removing the fuses for the audio elements (inc the AGW) to no avail. I have also removed the changer and radio to check the connections and I can see that the fibre out from the Audio 20 is pulsing red. Presumably trying to make contact with something !
Not too sure this is related, but the storage compartment button does not work, but the motor seems to work fine as I stripped it down and it seemed to reset then fails when you press the button.
I have trawled through almost every Audio posting and cannot find anyone who seems to have the same experience. What I have learnt is that there is one hell of a lot of knowledge on this board.
