Radio controls quit after few minutes

Okay, here's the background: I'm a new owner of an old car, 2000 CLK430. I did a couple searches of this section of the forum and didn't see anything similar so here goes. It is the stock radio system.

When I first start the car, the radio controls all work fine. I can change to AM/FM/WB, I can change the audio settings, tune the radio, etc. After a few minutes of driving the only control on the radio that works is the volume and the only way I can change stations is through the steering wheel controls. There is no way to change bands or other audio setting. The volume mode also works on the steering wheel.

I looked in the owners manual and I don't see this documented as a "feature" although I could imagine some safety engineer might have though it a good idea to keep us from doing things other than driving. So the question is, has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, is there a fix other than replacing the radio? Thanks in advance.

I used to stump one of my buddies with oddball computer issues that he had never seen and for which he had no answers. Eventually I would stumble on a solution, so maybe I'll come up with one for this as well.

If nothing else, I suppose I could put a normally closed, momentary switch in line with the power lead and use it as a reset button

I tried pulling the radio fuses for about 5 minutes and it seemed to work as I drove the car for about 15 minutes and all the controls work. Unfortunately, the next time I drove it the radio did the same problem again. I'm thinking it is time for an aftermarket radio.
