Radar detector???? decisions...decisions
Am looking for a good radar detector? Any thoughts on a brand and whether its worth the extra expense for the modular concealed unit vs self-contained unit? I hear mixed opinions on whether the dash or visor mount is better than grill mount due to height of antenna......which would you choose?
I worked in a retail store, so I got a price break on the Escorts, therefore I went with them.
IMO, it's a fantastic radar detector. It's on the same level as the V1, except a few minor differences, such as the directional arrows and the rear radar antenna.
The price between the two are $100 ($300 for Escort and $400 for Valentine)
Range on the 8500 is awsome, especially on the higway. Gets the state troopers and their traps they have. It also detects multiple radars at once (up to 8 signals), displaying on the display for you.
City wise, it's just as good. Very little false alarms, pending you put it in the "Auto" mode. It's very good at filtering out false alarms (garage openers, store automated doors, etc).
Size wise, it's thin, but a little on the long side. I have it hardwired (pretty east DIY project, just have to take your time) and you can't see it from the outside, so don't have to fear cops seeing you with a radar detector.
Good luck.
Just had a Bel remote radar/laser installed in my 2000 e320 in the ashtray. Installer did a real hack job. Not very pleased at all. Laser receivers are hanging in front and rear windows.
Am now considering ripping it out and buying new remote unit that has display that can be connected to an LED. I would hide this display out of sight in glovebox maybe and drill small hole in dash to mount the LED.
With the receiver on permanet mute - no annoying noise. Just an annoying LED winking at me when I need to be reminded of radar/laser in area.
Actually - I think laser detection is probably a waste as you're dead as soon as it's fired at you. No time to react. No beam width to warn you in advance.
My $.02 worth...
While I don't have a V1 yet, I'm going nuts when my detector goes off and I can't see (at night especially) if the cop is behind or ahead.
The arrows makes it priceless

yup...best defense against laser is if they shoot someone else near you and you catch the bouncing beam and then maybe you have a chance to slow down enough.
