I looked at a RAZR yesterday. Very disappointed. For $200 less you can get a Nokia w/ the same features. Ergonomics suck also. I should really sell that Motorola stock if this is the phone they are hoping to be the next Startec.

On the positive side - the Mikbox rocks. I've had it for over 6 months now. Works great, best money I've spent. It will clearly last longer than any cell phone I own and has a big enough list of compatible phones I should be able to find something I like.

Installer for Mik Box in Los Angeles?

Does anyone know of an experienced installer of Mik Boxes in Los Angeles? How much does the installation cost?

So given that I have what looks like a Timeport setup in my car, what's the cheapest (fully functional) GSM Motorola I can get along with a MIK box to get my car's phone up and running (it's going to be a backup not my normal phone so as long as it does address book & SMS it will be fine).

MIK has pricing info on his website at http://www.mikbox.com/order/. He designed, builds, and sells the MikBox, so he sets the pricing.

For approximation of what it cost me in an S500, see http://www.benzworld.org/publications/pub.asp?id=317 - a link I have posted often.

Smile I'm going to do it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going to try it. I've been without my carphone for four days now and I can't stand having to press those small keys with my bad eyes and having to hold the phone while I'm driving. Once you've used the MB carphone, you can't do without it.

You really can do it yourself, easily. See my writeup mentioned above, at http://www.benzworld.org/publications/pub.asp?id=317 - the article has internal links to the phone bulletins for your car on Paul H. Di ck's wonderful site, which will show you how to remove the trunk liner, and the specific location of your equipment (where it differs from mine).

If your car already had a phone installed, the MikBox installation is very simple; and you can disregard the portions dealing with the antenna switch and linear compensator. S-class models from 2001 and on already had the necessary dual band equipment.

A number of people whose cars never had phones have retrofitted them from scratch as a DIY project, incorporating the MikBox. The pre-wire in U.S. cars makes it easy. In addition to the PSE, linear compensator, antenna switch, MikBox, cradle, and cable from the RJ-48 to the cradle, you need some fuses - that's all. Paul's phone bulletins provide all the part numbers you need.

I have been very happy with my MikBox, especially its integration with COMAND, and the installation was a snap. MIK was super to do business with - he travels and is sometimes unavailable, but when in the US he is very responsive.

Good luck!!

Contact xtianpel@sbcglobal.net; his brother-in-law did a beautiful installation in Cristian's SL500, and installs in the L.A. area for $150. The link to Cristian's installation is at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...light=xtianpel

Wow! Replacing my OE StarTac with the parts shown on ebay ran $475 including the V710 shown ($150 from Verizon, with contract). The Mikbox, cradle, cable, and shipping came to $325. Granted, the V710 phones are about $500 without a contract, but $900 is a lot to have to pay.

Also, I don't see the antenna connector adapter that MIK provides with the cradle, when you buy from him. It's only about $10, but it's just a pain to locate one.

Because I needed needed to upgrade the antenna switch and linear compensator to dual band equipment in my 2000 S500, it cost another $95 (for used parts).

Well it's installed (really easy, only took ~40 minutes), and works fine, only issue I have at the moment is that the phone (a Motorola v551) isn't switching on automatically when I start the car, it switches off ok but not on.
The other pain I have is having to program all my numbers into the phone but that's Motorola's fault!

Congratulations!!

Be sure you have MIK's lataest firmware update, 2.11. His update page tells you how to check your version.

The MikBox is designed for the D2B fiber optic bus. If your car has it, a MikBox should work. If it has a MOST fiber optic bus, it won't.

As of now, the MikBox works with Motorola phones. MIK plans to make it work with others, including Ericcson - check the news page on his site at www.mikbox.com

It looks like I have the latest version (I sent all the details to Mik), I've also noticed that the Dashboard display doesn't show the network provider or signal strength, does anyone have this in their display (Isaw it in the M or G install photos)?

Need to have cluster coded

The reason the instrument panel is not showing the phone details is that the cluster needs to be version coded. The Mikbox is working properly.

I also have the Mikbox installed and get the same thing. It needs to be brought to the dealer to have it coded.
